Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Greenwich runner
Despite a windy hint of cold in the air, Sunday morning's February sun shone with a promise of spring. True to form, 3 GoodGymers met up with the Friends of Woolwich Common group for our usual end-of-the-month litter pick.
The first battle was against the wind to get the bin bags properly placed in the support loops. Bags secured, we all split in groups into different directions to tackle as much rubbish as we could in the time we had.
We found the usual suspects along the way: empty (and some not so empty) beer cans, water bottles, wrappers of various fast-food chains, and a mismatched set of cutlery (not of the plastic variety). The prize for weirdest rubbish, though, goes to Lynne who found 2 books (or maybe 2 halves of the same book?) - who knows remnants of a meeting of the Woolwich Literary and Potato Crisp Packet Society?
Amongst all the man-made litter, we also managed to spot the first signs of nature's awakening from winter in the form of some very yellow beautiful crocuses.
With 2 full and very heavy bags, we returned to the meeting point to find even more full bags. There's always hope that next month we will find a little less litter, and a whole lot more flowers!
We are a group of volunteers seeking to protect, preserve and campaign for Woolwich Common, a large green space in the Royal Borough in Greenwich, London.
