Report written by Katherine (she/her)
8 Goodgymers returned to the Kenilworth Centre to help with the next stage of their garden project.
After hearing about Laura and James's adventures at the Wolf Run at the weekend, we had a quick warm up and then headed up the rather steep hill from Abbey Field car park to the Kenilworth Centre.
The first task of the evening was weeding and digging over the borders. Having helped to remove the old border plants a few weeks ago, it was surprising to see how many weeds had started to come through. Given it's been quite dry over recent weeks this was quite a tough job and despite the cold weather, layers were coming off by the end of the task!
Once the borders were weeded, we placed some cardboard over the dug earth and weighted this down with bags of bark compost to stop it blowing away in order to keep the weeds away whilst the Centre awaits delivery of the new plants.
The next task was putting some soil into some lovely new troughs that are due to be planted up. This involved mixing some perlite into the soil before adding to the troughs. Unfortunately we didn't quite have time to fill all the troughs, but managed to get half of them ready for planting.
Of course we also had the very important task of keeping an eye on the fairy houses that had been painted by the group at the Kenilworth Centre this evening whilst they dried :-)
With everything tidied up and packed away, we headed back towards Abbey Fields and had time for a quick relay up and down a stretch of the park. It was a longer than anticipated drag up the hill(!) but the teams were incredibly well matched and it was good to practise some hills ahead of the Kenilworth May Day 10k which some of us are hoping to complete at the weekend.
Looking forward to helping at the Lord Leycester Hospital next week!
