Report written by Simon Fitzmaurice
Great to be meeting up with our Goodgym crew again, back at the Emirates Stadium for a traditional group session. We made our way over to Market Road Gardens tonight, with Danny leading one team down Benwell Road, and Trainer Simon linking a second group to McKenzie Road via the Ringcross Community Centre (keeping our numbers under 6 total when traveling together).
Upon arriving at the site, we were met with Frannie, the coordinator for Octopus Communities Network, and a filmmaker called Terry. A short film is currently being made about Islington Community Gardens, and Goodgym were invited to contribute! Steve and Trainer Simon provided some soundbites for the project- we have been promised the chance to see the finished product in due course.
We were kept busy with plenty of different tasks tonight. Brambles, thistles and thorns were removed from the main wild garden section of the park, and long tendrils of over-grown branches were lopped and snipped from the surrounding fences. We collected all the green waste as best we could using wheel barrows (and an abandoned shopping trolley!) and added the snippets to a large composting point on the left side of the gardens.
As you can see from the pictures included above, we made some cracking progress with this project. We will be back next week to continue where we left off as well!
The next 2 following Saturdays (22nd and 29th), Octopus Communities Network will be hosting a task at the Highbury Quadrant Estate (12 midday onwards). Have a look and sign up here:
