A quick post-work mission was on the cards today, as I met up with Matt for a mission in Southwark for Mrs M. Despite this being the first time I've ever met Matt, my head naturally sings his full name to the theme tune of "New Girl", something which I managed to confess to within the first 3 minutes of meeting ("Who's Matt Guy? Who's Matt Guy? It's Jess! (Not really)"). Thankfully, despite this weirdness, he's offered to help find an appropriate word to use instead of "Jess" so that at least the song makes logical sense. Top man, Matt Guy 👍😎
Our mission today was to help create space for a new hospital bed by removing a single recliner bed and mattress from an upstairs bedroom to the front porch. Mrs M's daughter will then arrange for the council to collect the removed bed.
We were greeted at the door by Mrs M's daughter, who's been looking after Mrs M since she was released from hospital just over a week ago. After a brief amount of small talk (in which we discussed my desire to ride the Kennington loop and in which I forgot to mention that the current "Kennington pong" is a real thing), we got to work.
Matt got the ball rolling by taking out the headboard, before we both took out the (very light) single mattress.
Next came the biggie! Despite only being a single bed, the recliner mechanism gave it an infinite weight (le sigh). After the three of us managed to get it out of the first room, the narrow hallway meant that Matt and Mrs M's daughter ended up dragging the bed along the landing to the top of the stairs while I felt immeasurably guilty for hovering. Thankfully, I was soon able to rejoin them on the stairs for the final leg of the mission; taking it down the stairs and out of the house (I'm pretty sure I sweated more than the two of them combined, despite doing the least amount of carrying, but hey-ho).
Mrs M's daughter was very grateful for our work. It also sounded as though we'd moved the bed just in time, as she received a phone call about the delivery of the new bed while we were leaving. Phew!
It was lovely working with you, Matt: See you on another one! 😄 (Fyi, It turns out that the recliner chair mission you mentioned was the one with Hilary, although it wasn't the pun I was thinking of 🤦 )
