Report written by Danny
10 of us were out this sweltering GoodGym Shindig Sunday back at St. John's community garden in Archway.
We had some sad news to start off, that across several night this week stuff on the site had been vandalised. Specifically the plants, and specifically in a way that would kill them. In many cases the plants had been provided by family in dedication to someone who was deceased, so it was doubly hard for the task owners to see them go, and in this way. Apparently the culprit, who works under the cover of darkness left their spectacles there the last time, so hopefully won't be able to find their way back there any longer to carry on.
With 20 GoodGym hands on deck, we were able to provide assistance in all sorts of departments... glueing established brick borders together to proof them against damage, creating new brick borders along the edges of beds, planting and watering-in new plants, and of course... weeding.
We also learned some pretty tasty trivia about the place this time...
The church building, built in the 1820s was among three in Islington designed by Charles Barry - famous for his work on the Palace of Westminster, or to you and I, the Houses of Parliament. (for more big-time church architecture in the area, St. Gabriel's straight across the street was designed by Gerard Goalen, famous for his Catholic Modernist churches)
The second factoid is that the current reverend of the church is the club chaplain at Leyton Orient, and scored 46 goals for the club during the 3 years he played there during the 1980s.
Many of us played the full 90 mins today and were able to wind-down nicely at the end after another long hot weekend.
Thanks for coming team, thanks to Sally and Liz for photos, and big up Sally for listing the task again this week!

Thanks both! Apparently it will be a while before GG are needed back here, so was nice to give it a good send-off 👍
