With the introduction of the new cleaning-up slot on Friday evening for the Ealing Soup Kitchen task, I thought I give it a go. Steph who is a regular on Fridays and Mondays with the soup kitchen was serving the last bit of takeaways and preparing himself to clean up the kitchen when I arrived.
All the clients have left except a few who were finishing their meal and having some tea before they leave. I was tasked with wiping the table clean and folding and stacking them. Folding the tables was a bit trickier as I needed to push at a certain angle to unlock the legs and fold them.
Steph was in charge of cleaning and arranging the utensils and was pretty much the acting chef of the day. After vacuuming the floors, I was preparing the bucket to mop the floor. Steph advised that I leave a bit of walking space between the kitchen and the hall area so that I don't need to mop multiple times.
Once the dining area is mopped, I was waiting for Steph and other kitchen volunteers to finish their bit so that I can vacuum and mop the kitchen. Wrapping up was completed before 4:10 pm as everyone was efficient.
Before leaving, Angela, the soup kitchen coordinator, wanted to take a photo of us and mistook Steph's usual ✌️ sign for a gang sign. Then Steph had to give an explanation of ✌️ peace sign vs rock on 🤘.
Ealing Soup Kitchen is a registered charity set up to help the vulnerable and homeless in the area. Nine local churches support our faith-based Soup Kitchen, which has been running since 1973.
