Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Patrick Luong
Two GoodGymmers helped an older lady move around her bathroom more safely by removing her old handrail ready for a new one to be fitted later
Can't do DIY
Today we were helping Kath (not her real name) in Southwark who has ordered a new handrail to be installed in her bathroom so that she can be confident in moving around safely.
Alas, the handyman said it was out of his remit to remove the old one. Usually, Kath would be up to do this and had knowledge and a decent toolkit, but she's not strong enough anymore.
GoodGym to the rescue!
The handrail was quick to release: we had to pull against some glue and remove screws and then apply a good dose of elbow grease to remove or push in the rawl plugs.
Quick task number 2
While we were there, Kath asked if we could move her toilet roll holder a little further along the wall as it was not conveniently located.
This was a fiddle and a diddle but we got there in the end once we found the tools and bits. Kath was very happy with the results and we surprised ourselves that we could do it; Latoya even had a bit of a singsong from Thumbelina.
The upshot was two tasks done in about 45 mins, and one happy Kath who could look forward to a sturdier handrail to be installed later in the day.
What a way to start AND also finish a working day!
I had great pleasure in teaming up with Latoya this sunny morning who was on her way home, while I was on my way in.
Contrary to photos of only Latoya, I did a fair chunk of the work, too!
