Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Melanie Young (she/her)
On a truly scorchio Bank Holiday Monday (the hottest since the Bank Holiday was first invented in 1978 - remember that anyone?), 5 intrepid GoodGymmers arrived for a special bumper mission to move Mrs J's furniture from one care-assisted flat to another larger one upstairs.
It was Hannah's first mission and she was all for diving head-first into the task. So much so that she sprained an ankle and bloodied a knee on the kerb just out of sight of Paul and David. Matt and Melanie helped her inside and a fellow resident brought her amazing stash of plasters to patch up Hannah's knee.
Mrs J and her husband were "just moving upstairs" and we soon set about lifting and shifting belongings and furniture with the help of two shopping trolleys and the lift. Although we discovered the stairs were much closer and quicker, so the shopping trolleys were taken up in the lift and carried down the stairs!
We were very lucky that a lot of the furniture was quite light, if a little awkward. Matt managed to take apart a wonky double wardrobe which we carried piecemeal upstairs. We put it together so well that it wasn't wonky anymore! OK, it took five of us holding it together so that we could get the joints tightened up, but we were triumphant! Hannah was back with us supervising the reconstruction.
The pride and joy TV proved a bit awkward and cable-y, then someone noticed a washing machine. Yikes! Somehow it was lifted into a shopping trolley and ably pushed to the lift .
All-in-all a couple of hours' intense work and possibly the most steps ever taken on a mission. Should've strava-ed the mission...
