Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Anastasia Hancock (she/her)
We had so much good news this week - the perfect way to kick off our Monday night run.
A massive well done went firstly to Chris who absolutely smashed the Richmond marathon in under 4 hours on Sunday, yet still came out to run with us last night. Hero! Congrats also to the lovely Alyx who is going to be leading the newest GoodGym group at King's College very soon!
We also welcomed some great new faces to the team for their first GoodGym run last night. Give a big cheer to Adam, Katy, Liam, Christina and Rita!
There are a number of missions tonight, Wednesday and Thursday if you fancy filling your week with good(gym)ness, and don't forget the fabulous and free fitness for all on Thursdays at Clapham Common.
After all that good stuff we gathered outside the BAC for our warm up, and to talk about our favourite, er, smells. Coffee, bacon and baked goods came out top, with The Vatican even popping up. So cultured! With our heart rates up we set off for Wendelsworth community garden 3.2 kilometers away.
We arrived just as the sun had set - don't forget your head torches for the outside tasks, gang - to find Martin ready and waiting for us with a pile of tools, bin bags and a massive leaf pen ready to be emptied. With one group starting off by shoveling mulch into bags in what turned out to be an epic upper body workout, the rest of the group formed a human chain across the lawn.
Half an hour later we could see the bare earth, and a huge pile of filled bags had formed. Amazing work, team. All that was left was to run up to Wandsworth Common for our glutes blast. It started off with 45 seconds each of 6 different exercises, with a 15 second break between each one. They included skaters, hip drives, squats (of course), power skips, walking and side lunges. As well as giving you that peachy butt, strong glutes are vital for great running as they help protect your knees, prevent injury and keep your torso aligned.
We split up into two groups to run back, with Nick leading the second lot of runners and setting a good pace on the last hill. Great running last night, everyone. Next week we're back to a vital community centre in Battersea. Its a shorter run and we'll be doing a meaty fitness session in the park afterwards, so sign up here to do good, get fit and have a happy old time in the process.
