We three GoodGymers of the foodbank are Bearing bags to the drivers’ cars Sprouts and parsnips, carrots and turnips Hampers to deliver afar

Where I work we have a star of the week. If GoodGym Newcastle had a star of the week, surely it would be Tom. With consecutive days at the foodbank, three tasks in two days and five tasks in less than a week he’s really spreading the seasonal good will. Oh, and did we mention he did a task on his birthday?! He shared the interesting fact today that sprouts have been modified over the years to be sweeter than they used to be!

Michael and I joined Tom for our regular weekly session at the East End Women’s foodbank with the usual tasks of getting various parcels of food and toiletries ready for the volunteer drivers to deliver. (I think Michael did two days in a row too!) The bags were super full for Christmas so it was a great workout! We also had the very welcome handicap of having to manoeuvre around lots of huge bags of veg and stacks of wrapped presents for children waiting to be added to the already packed hampers, ready to be delivered to the people of Walker next week. Although GoodGym will be helping with the hamper deliveries next week, I won’t be able to be there (hence my festive outfit today!) so I’d like to take advantage of my report-writing role and say what a privilege it’s been to help out such a wonderful organisation this year. I hope everyone who works at Building Futures East and East End Women and everyone who uses this fantastic service has a wonderful happy and healthy Christmas. See you next year! xxx

East End Women
A project supporting women with skills and training, education, loneliness and domestic abuse recovery.

East End Women offers practical courses for women to build confidence and skills around DIY, sewing, pattern cutting and basic trades. We also deliver the Freedom Programme domestic abuse recovery course, helping women to better understand the roots of domestic abuse and build confidence to identify warning signs in the future. In addition to this, East End Women also offer social activities and drop-in sessions for women experiencing isolation to meet one another, make friends and build local networks.
