Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Peter Van Tongeren
OK, it was on Wilton Estate, but it is off Wilton Way so a little literary freedom was used for the title!
The first Hackney community mission under the new 'rules'... it takes a little getting used to, not meeting at the bakery to go for a run etc, but it was nice to be back at one of the longest running task locations for the Hackney crew. Amy mentioned she did her first ever GG task here, way back in 2016!
Due to the miserable weather leading up to starting time a few wisely decided to give it a few minutes before setting off, unfortunately Martin was not so lucky - he arrived properly soaked through after an initially nice looking run. After a bit of a slow start, the weather cleared up, the tools came out and we got to work.
Most of the team started with de-weeding beds on one side of the square, John, Deirdre, Amy & Kathleen clearing one completely of vegetation, while Paul & Jen carefully picked weeds from in between the plants in the next one. Martin & Toyin got stuck in with spreading wood chip over a previously cleared bed, before continuing with the freshly cleared stretch. As a sign of having to get back into the swing of things, I realised too late I should have taken a 'before' picture to show you the difference - you'll just have to take our word for it that it is indeed a massive change!
All too soon the clock ticked past 7PM and as by magic, the rain returned. Cleaning up and clearing away the tools was done soon, a quick chat goodbye and off we all went. Great to see some familiar faces again, it has been too long and lovely to meet a few new ones! Water on the lens made the post-task group pic a bit blurry - apologies.
Thanks to all braving the weather and join us. Till next time (soon?)
