Yoga has been found to have numerous physical and mental health benefits for humans. Here are some of the latest scientific thinking as to why yoga is good for humans: 1. Reduces stress and anxiety: Yoga practices such as deep breathing, meditation, and mindfulness have been found to reduce levels of cortisol, a hormone associated with stress, and increase levels of the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), which helps regulate anxiety. 2. Improves flexibility and balance: Yoga poses, also known as asanas, help improve flexibility and balance by stretching and strengthening muscles. 3. Enhances strength and endurance: Certain yoga poses, such as the plank, chaturanga, and warrior poses, can help build strength and endurance by working multiple muscle groups simultaneously. 4. Promotes cardiovascular health: Yoga practices that involve dynamic movements and controlled breathing, such as vinyasa flow, have been found to improve cardiovascular health by increasing heart rate and improving circulation. 5. Improves sleep: Research suggests that regular yoga practice can improve sleep quality and duration, possibly due to its stress-reducing effects. 6. May reduce chronic pain: Some studies suggest that yoga can be an effective complementary therapy for chronic pain conditions such as arthritis and back pain, possibly due to its ability to reduce inflammation and improve physical function. Overall, the latest scientific thinking suggests that yoga can be a valuable tool for improving physical and mental health.
