Plog Like An Egyptian

Lewisham Report written by Lewisham runner

Four people signed up for this and as it is a task that can be done at any time and anywhere, this report may get added to.

Paul and Adi had a common feature on their Lewisham litter picking - Egyptian geese, but that's as far as the similarities went. Adi was in Sydenham's.Mayow Park where not much litter was found but lots of Christmas trees, a few of which were moved to their collection point (a traditional GoodGym activity.

Paul was in Deptford's Brookmill Park where high waters on the Ravensbourne due to rain had brought lots litter downstream - there was more litter collected than there had been for several months. In other news there the more herons this week and the youngster has survived the freezing temperatures.

New Year, New Litter

Lewisham Report written by Lewisham runner

The first Lewisham litter pick of the new year had same the same participants and same locations as much of the the last year. Adi was in Sydenham's Mayow Park picking up debris from New Year's revelries - cans, bottles and spent fireworks.

Paul was in Deptford's Brookmill Park, alongside the Ravensbourne. Heavy frosts had killed off most of the remaining nettles so there were lots of cans and bottles that were now accessible. More litter was collected than for several months - around 3 black sacks full. There was also a lot of activity on the herons' nest - with a tiny head and beak peering out and probably at least one more youngster that was more reticent about being seen.

The Lewisham Litterati Do Another Weekend Shift

Lewisham Report written by Lewisham runner

The usual part of the weekend litterati were out keeping Lewisham litter free, Adi enjoyed the glorious sunrise on Saturday in Sydenham’s Mayow Park - although couldn’t help feeling that it calm before the storm, litter wise, as a Santa's grotto was being setup for later.

Paul was in Deptford’s Brookmill Park a day earlier in drizzle, where there seemed to be an abundance of abandoned coffee cups and energy drink cans. He was able to see a lot of wildlife as he picked and bagged the litter, after last week’s nest preparation by the herons, that seemed to have been disrupted by the return of one of last year’s brood. There was a young fox, plus lots of ducks and a kingfisher zooming past.

Herons, Heineken and Heaps of Plastic

Lewisham Report written by Lewisham runner

The usual duo of Adi and Paul picked litter in two parts of Lewisham - the former in Sydenham’s Mayow Park, the latter in Deptford’s Brookmill Park.

Paul found lots of plastic brought down by recent high flows on the Ravensbourne - around a couple of black bags full, a lot more than recent weeks. There was also an abandoned shopping trolley to report via Love Clean Streets.

There was other activity along the Ravensbourne too, the herons were nesting! This is several weeks earlier than last year.

Thank you! I’ll probably do an update on them most weeks until their young fledge. It’s an utter joy watching them as I pick litter.

It's so nice observing the wildlife and the changing seasons. A very mindful thing.

It really is! There is so much variety for an urban setting - what I see varies from week to week, on river levels and more broadly on the seasons. Whatever my mood is when I start, it is always better when I finish - it sets me up for the rest of the day.
