Licence to spill

Tower Hamlets Report written by Laura Williams

A small but dedicated group of GoodGymers headed to the base of Ocean Youth Connexions in Limehouse this evening.

The Centre is taking shape nicely, with rooms being cleared and painted, toilets given a coat of paint and the yard spruced up.

Oliver and Sam were first to head outside. Armed with paint trays, rollers and overalls they made their way to the dark green container to complete a whopping two coats.

Meanwhile first time GoodGymer Liv headed upstairs with Justin to blitz the toilets in a speedy bathroom-painting double bill.

Charlie headed out to the shutters to start cleaning them for the next big paint job in August.

Ruby cleared the yard of leaves, twigs, soil and bits of litter before bagging and binning the lot.

It was another productive evening with GoodGymers working at an exceptionally fast pace.

At shortly after 8, paint trays were scraped, bins filled, dirty water emptied and pics posed for.

Another lovely night in Limehouse.

As I was leaving I asked Kamal how he managed to get the place looking so good in a relatively short space of time: "GoodGym", he replied, "It's the GoodGymers."

Until next time.

Weed Are The Champions

Tower Hamlets Report written by Laura Williams

A mild June evening saw 13 GoodGymers gather at Tower Hamlets Community Transport in Limehouse.

It’s coming up to a year since we first visited Kamal here, the new home of Ocean Youth Connexions admin and training operations.

Since then we’ve weeded the wall multiple times, cleared soil, raked zillions of leaves, picked litter, emptied barrows full of greenery and done our fair share of painting.

A popular task (due to the location, well organised activity, great before and after pics and the organisations we’re supporting), this Monday night activity is always well attended, so we were able to form multiple teams again tonight to:

  • Pull large areas of weeds away from walls and fences.

  • Clear small weeds away from the areas of the yard.

  • Dispose of the greenery in the outside park area.

  • Pick litter.

  • Paint gold drainpipes!

It was a fab team effort, with GoodGymers joining forces to rake piles, blitz troublesome weedy areas and climb ladders to reach high painting spots.

The time as usual flew by, and it seemed like we'd only just started before the group were gathering for the final photo and congratulating Lucinda on her 50th good deed! John presented Lucinda with her very own black t-shirt before they both posed for the obligatory pic. Congratulations, Lucinda - you're such a big part of Tower Hamlets GoodGym!

Thanks to John and Chris for pics and project management tonight.

Join the team for a fun get together in Bethnal Green this Friday at Mother Kelly's, while next week, we're back to Meath Gardens for our first visit of 2025!

Until then...

You can Bank on GoodGym to smell a rat

Tower Hamlets Report written by John Shirley

Never mind the Bank Holiday, GoodGym Tower Hamlets were out in good numbers for another visit to Margaret and Ash’s community garden. We met two new Good-Deeders – and 50% of them even managed to find the notoriously tucked-away Rocky Park in time! Good to meet you Ellie and Elena, hope to see you again soon. We also welcomed back Priscila, who was already heading for another GoodGym session the following night. And we congratulated Kitty and Michael on their recent Marathon efforts.

Our main task was to dig three large holes into which to insert olive trees which had outgrown their plant pots. We set to work so quickly that we’d soon excavated three deep, wide pits, into which the trees were carefully re-housed with the addition of some compost, and now have plenty of room to expand and thrive.

Additionally, we were tasked with weeding the neighbouring area, having eventually reached a consensus on the vital question “what is a weed?”. We also picked a few bits of litter which were blighting the area – including an unfortunate rat which had met its end midway across the grass.

Next Monday night we’ll be helping at Ocean Youth Connexions in Limehouse. See https://www.goodgym.org/v3/sessions/the-big-monday-night-task-may-visit-to-ocean-youth-connexions.

And don’t forget you can join one of our quiz teams at the Coburn, near Mile End and Bow Road stations, next Sunday. Sign up at https://www.goodgym.org/v3/sessions/quiz-time-at-the-coburn.

Marathon Effort, Maximum Cheer

Tower Hamlets Report written by Emma Jones

A small but mighty team of five Tower Hamlets GoodGymers joined forces with the charity Missing People to bring some serious cheer to the London Marathon yesterday in our very own borough!

Stationed just after mile 16 on the Isle of Dogs on what was a scorcher of a day - and a tough part of the course where runners really start to dig deep – we brought the noise with plenty of sun, smiles, and shouted names. There were loads of GoodGym shoutouts too, with lots of runners lighting up when they spotted our red shirts!

It was a brilliant way to spend the day: supporting an amazing charity, cheering on some incredible efforts, and soaking up the brilliant atmosphere of marathon day.

Huge thanks to everyone who came along!
