Dungle fever

Southwark Report written by Girija Tase

We were very excited to be back at Surrey Docks Farm for the second time this year.

We were split into three groups. One group cleared out the goats' area. Another watered vegetable patches. The third transported manure to the relatively new river garden.

Many eager goodgym hands made light work of the first two tasks and we soon moved to the river garden. At the river garden we helped turn the manure that the third group had transported in with the soil.

We took it in turns to shovel manure from the very large heap and wheelbarrow-ing it to the garden.

The sun was shining gloriously and we got to see our goat, donkey, sheep and pig friends. A great afternoon all in all.

Back to the farm: Rule of Sieve

Southwark Report written by Sam Lefevre (he/him)

In the lovely Sunday sunshine, six GoodGymers met outside one, if not, the favourite task in the Southwark borough (a poll or survey hasn't been done to prove any of this). It was great to be back at the farm and what a fabulous time to visit just when the sheep and the goats are expecting. They were definitely heavily pregnant and waiting to give birth to twins and triplets!

Becs was on hand to sort us out with a couple of tasks that involved the compost heap and soil.

Task 1: Vic and Lucia were on hand to specially mix different soil ingredients in a builder mixer (usually used for cement). It was a very particular task as everything had to be measured and time to a tee!

Task 2: Hannah, Emma, Tracey (her first time at the farm) and Sam took on the task on getting out this makeshift motorised sieve machine to sieve out the sticks and stones from the good compost heap. The task did not need all four of us after we got a routine going, so Emma and Tracey went onto Task 3....

Task 3: Sweep the goat pen - everyone's favourite task as you get close and personal with the goats as you sweep your way around the yard. Yet, this time around the goats were either coming up to you in search of food or moving as little as possible as they did look like they were ready to get birth.

The 2 hours whizzed by and I am glad Hannah and I managed to get 2 wheelbarrows of sieved compost (triple filtered by the way...so really good stuff). We got in the all-important farm photo and I am sure those who will be going to the farm next week....you'll see a few new additions to the farm family.

Southwark Report written by Sam Lefevre (he/him)

Five GoodGymers spent their Saturday morning sprucing up Galleywall Nature Reserve!

Jane and her team had plenty of tasks for us to do:

  1. Mulching and building a barrier/border around their raised beds
  2. Sorting out the tools
  3. Breaking up twigs and woodsticks from a makeshift firepit the children set up
  4. Raking the leaves
  5. Litter picking
  6. Using the crowbar to take out the nails from makeshift wooden skis!
  7. Sorting out the shed - taking things out, organising and putting things back in order.
  8. Trimming the trees with secateurs

Everyone got stuck in with their own individual or team task and 2 hours flew by!

Jane and her Nature Reserve team will want us back in 2021 and I'm sure we will be there! šŸ˜Š
