All you need is Macmillan!

Thursday 5th December 2019

Written by Sophie Hastings

As we had done a smashing job at the Cardiff Beer & Cider Festival, we were asked to collect on behalf of Macmillan again!

We all headed over to St David's hall nice and early (well they do they say the early bird catches the worm... right?) to help out the Sold Out Bootleg Beatles concert to collect donations and spare change in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.

Catherine, the Macmillan fundraising Manager, welcomed us with a big smile and told us a bit about the charity in more detail. The atmosphere was amazing as you could hear John Lennon singing through the walls making you just want to sway from side to side and celebrate the festive cheer.

Catherine gave us some stunning sashes to don (if I do say so myself) and some green donation buckets and we got into our places - 2 people on each floor. With buckets in hands, the crowd startled trickling out with massive grins on their face and the donations were flowing.

Even though my bucket or Nathan's may not have been the heaviest as we were right near the end of the forever growing crowd, we still raised what felt like a fair amount of funds for Macmillan (Lucy and Aimee's buckets looked relatively heavy though).

All in all, it was a successful mission with all volunteers working hard. As Lennon would say, everybody can "get by with a little help from friends".

Brave the Shave with Macmillan

Thursday 17th October 2019

Written by Nathan Swain

Goodgym Cardiff headed to the Great Welsh Cider and Beer Festival this Wednesday - not as a social - but to help the event charity partners Macmillan collect spare change and donations in their buckets

One wonderful lady was Braving the Shave and cutting her flowing hair. Shaving it all off to encourage generous donations. Big kudos to the guy who grabbed the mic to proclaim he was setting down a twenty on the stage and encouraging fellow beer enthusiasts to do likewise.

It proved one of the toughest community missions to date - not through physical exertion but in the torment of locking four GG runners in a room full of Wales' finest beer and them not being able to touch a drop!

Jesus Christ, Superstars! (How I wonder what you are)

Wednesday 31st July 2019

Written by Peter Gillibrand

It was an emotional rollercoaster as 4 Goodgym runners from the Welsh Capital donned their t-shirts to help fundraise.

These 4 runners could take on any task with their can-do attitude as they grabbed their buckets and shouted at the top of their lungs (well Pete did).

In return, they got to see the wonderful musical - Jesus Christ Superstar. From laughing to crying to Herod (AKA Trump) stripping and doing cabaret - that got them going to raise money outside.

With Lydia and her 100 tops on, they braved the cold conditions (it was mild) and hit the ‘strip’.

“Anyone spare any change for macmillan? Every penny make a difference to so many lives” they chanted with passion behind every breath they took.

And that passion was with Andrew who couldn’t resist seeing the superstar in person... the real Jesus Christ... IN PERSON!!

Oh and... on the way out, he even got asked when he last had sex in a truly dramatic fashion..! (That’s a tale for the Glassworks on Tuesday!)

Pete eventually got a pint in return for going along to a drama practice...

Big thanks to Lucy for organising such a fun task and we can’t wait to see how far the money will go to help people with cancer.

Big shoutout to Everyman Theatre Cardiff for an outstanding show which could have easily got to the West End. That would have knocked Andrew Lloyd Webber’s socks off.

The charity? Why Macmillan of course! Who are they I hear you ask? Well they’re the amazing people that help people with cancer - emotionally, financially and physically from the diagnosis.

Buckets of pun at the show! It was the Hi-De-Highlight of our week!

Wednesday 3rd July 2019

Written by Emma Wilkins

On a lovely summer evening, we met outside the theatre ready for showtime!

Arriving a little early, I met Nicky from Macmillan who provided us with green sashes and two buckets ready for our collection effort at the end of the night. Macmillan are attending 45 theatre nights in the coming weeks so we’e grateful for the support of GoodGym.!

We were free to enjoy the show before our mission. What a show! Filled with enthusiasm, music and a fair amount of innuendo, the team brought the old school comedy memories flooding back!

Sadly, all good things must come to an end and we dashed out ready for our collection duties! Aimee’s enthusiastic shouts of ‘Goodnight campers!’ put some smiles on faces and attracted a few more coins! We then met Jim to handover our buckets.

Hi-de-hi! Ho-de-ho!
