Manor & Castle Development Trust

Together we make the difference

The new Manor Castle ward combines the two old wards of Manor and Castle. It is very largely a working class area predominantly made up of social housing. However following the right-to-buy legislation and a large scale programme of demolition and rebuild in the last 15 years, owner occupation has increased. The Manor area is predominantly white while the Castle side is more culturally diverse with the Parkhill flats dominating the area until recently.

The Manor estate along with neighbourhoods like Wybourn and Skye Edge faced serious problems following the collapse of Sheffield’s major manufacturing industries on which most families were dependent financially. The consequence was a rapid decline, from it being a relatively wealthy area to an estate with a high dependency on benefits and the resulting poverty.

This was compounded by a contemporaneous deterioration in the housing stock, the inevitable result being social decline: increased crime; poor educational attainment; high unemployment; poor health.

By 1996, the Manor estate was labelled the 'worst estate in Britain'. The Guardian article that labelled the Manor in this way galvanised local people into taking action, and out of this Manor and Castle Development Trust was born.

Helping to deliver school meals to kids - no pun needed

Monday 8th February 2021

Written by Andrew Waters

On a snowy Sheffield day 3 GG runners joined Charlotte to help unload a van of food in readiness for sorting for free school meals.

What arrived wasn’t a van - it was a lorry - full of big pallets of carrots, parsnips, potatoes, garlic, oil, pita bread, Nan bread and much more besides.

Unloading it was definitely akin to 2 or 3 Jo Wicks Bodycoach sessions ...

Another great job GG Sheffield !

And double respect to Rachel for running there and back with the snow & the hills.

Say 'No' to the Dress :)

Monday 7th September 2020

Written by Sheffield runner

Goodgymers got stuck in, to tackle the masses of donated clothes and toys, that were a gathering.

Say No to dresses, No to heels, we only wish to keep clothes with a practical feel.

Charlotte's car was filled to the brim, with clothes that will be sold and recycled to help the Echo Charity Shop stock be a little more trim.

More to tackle another day, please look out for more community missions here in the future, hey :)
