Nextdoor Nature

Helping Ujala create a Community garden space
BBO Wildlife Trust is running a one year long project in Slough, helping local Communities engage with nature and wildlife, by supporting them in improving their communal outdoor spaces. Ujala has agreed to participate to this exciting project. There is a lovely space at the back that needs clearing before we can start planting and creating a nature friendly space that people can benefit from.

14 GoodGymers have supported Nextdoor Nature with 14 tasks.

Sizzling…

Tuesday 13th June 2023

Written by Manjit Birk

After having to cancel last nights session due to lightening and heavy rain I re raised the task for this morning.

Only I could attend but I knew the Ujala ladies group would be there to give a helping hand.

So 3 of us spent a bit of time weeding around the front of the building.

Tomorrow is a better day

Tuesday 25th April 2023

Written by Manjit Birk

This session was yesterdays session but yesterday was full of heavy downpours so tomorrow we thought would be a better day!

And what a better day it really was. A bit chilly to start with but before long we are ditching the coats as we cleared two more paths.

The area we have been working on is now having wildflowers seeded.

Its all coming along nicely!

Sweeping statement

Monday 3rd April 2023

Written by Manjit Birk

We were back at Ujala Foundation to continue with the garden makeover.

With the wet weather recently all the weeds had reappeared in the bed we cleared a few weeks ago so it was back to work in that area again.

Peter, Sandy and I are now expert diggers and it was lovely to have Jen join us on her first time at this task.

My legs ached at every move so my vocal sounds may have sounded a bit pained but je pense its because I just ran marathon de Paris!!!

With more daylight it was actually good to see what we were doing for a change!

Well done on a great task!

There is no task on Monday next week but there will be on Saturday! Helping Slough Outreach with a store room tidy up.

Thyme of our lives

Monday 20th March 2023

Written by Manjit Birk

We were back for our week 4 of 4 at Ujala Foundation working alongside BBOWT on the #nextdoornature project.

We've achieved so much over the past 4 week but there is still a lot more to do so we have booked in 2 more dates in April (3rd and 24th).

Tonight we had a very special milestones to celebrate!

Sandy’s 200th Good Deed

What an amazing achievement. She first came along to a session in around Aug 2018 and aren't we glad she did.

Sandy as you can tell gets involved in nearly every Monday evening session. Ever since she came back from traveling all clover the world she’s been at our side as one of our biggest supporters. She comes rain or shine with beaming smile ready to fill us in with her weekend antics. Sandy is also an active task force member whose reports are always very punny! A real DJ who knows how to turnip the volume!

When asked which task was her favourite, Sandy replied

I enjoy every task as each week is different but what I love the most is seeing the same GoodGymers week on week.

Well done Sandy

Diggin' it

So the task was to carry on with the digging up of the beds which were now looking very sleepy with heavy weeds and grass keeping them all snug and warm. Our job was to unleash the covers and put a chill back into the bed! We did this just like a mother would wake up a sleeping teenager!

With another bed nearly done we reckon we would need another 4/5 visits to complete the rest of the site!

It was lovely to have Jenny join us again after a ‘we were on a break’ period!

Claire was back on her second good deed - well done! Hope to see you in a few weeks.

At the start of the session I led the running team out for a 2km run whilst Sut lead the team straight to the task.

Plenty of effort went into tonight’s task. Even the worms were impressed!

Next week we are doing a leaflet task around the streets of Salt Hill Park.

Weed did a lot!

Monday 13th March 2023

Written by Manjit Birk

On week 3 out of 4 on our #nextdoornature mini project with BBOWT and Ujala Foundation.

The wind was just easing off as we met in the car park at Manor Park.

It was great to have Clare join us on her first task with us. I met Clare at a networking event in December... so it was great to see her again.

Peter had some ground breaking tools on him which helped Sut and I with the side garden bedding. We did dig doing it but have to get a bit of a shovel on to finish it!

Jean, Pam and Clare pulled out all the weeds and moss from the around the flower pots and what a dandy-lion job they did too! Just check out the before and afters!

Last week next week before we take a garden task break but we will be back.. still got so much to do!

A garlic a day… keeps everyone away

Monday 6th March 2023

Written by Manjit Birk

We were back at Ujala this evening on our mini project of revamping their garden space back into a usable space for the members to use.

It was great to have a big team on tonight with Jenni and Emily joining us from Ealing - great to see you ladies. Sandy, Jean and Peter were on their first visit to Ujala whereas Sutyee, Pam and I are now veterans!

With a weather warning in place and the rain starting to come down fast we wanted to just crack on with the task so we bypassed the 'running to' bit and got on with the 'task bit', though Jean and I did go for a km run after the task...

We clove this task a lot

So the brief for tonight's task was to dig up all the beds of any garlic! So that's exactly what we did! Jean, Sandy, Pam, Peter and Jenni had no issues with the vampires tonight with the amount of garlic they managed to dig out.

Sut and Emily unfounded a new path to the side part of the garden, which unearthed a few horrors...in particular a scary looking doll!

With so many hands on deck we managed another great 'before' and 'after' photoshoot. With the rain now coming down even faster we called it a night but only after spending 10 minutes trying to perfect the perfect

Next week we will be focusing on the front garden and turning over all the beds
