200 not out!

Monday 24th January 2022

Written by Anji Andrews (she/her)

After a very successful leaflet drop "part one" for Reviving the Heart of the West end (RWHE) to spread the word of their community event, the pressure was on tonight! With another 200 leaflets and approximately four streets to cover, I wasn't sure we'd get it all done.

"You really shouldn't underestimate us!" - Michael

With Max as the only runner tonight, he impressively took off uphill ready to start leafleting- his method of not spooking the residents being creating as much movement as he could- while myself, Aimee and Michael started power walking to avoid getting too cold.

I was amazed to find a few houses that still had Christmas decorations up (is this what people do to avoid January blues?!) and again we found as soon as we hit a long terraced street that the leaflets absolutely flew out. Thankfully there were no trapped fingers tonight!

All 200 leaflets were done in about 40 minutes tonight and we felt really satisfied to meet back up, empty handed. We took a steady walk back to our start point feeling pleased the job was done that will hopefully make a difference to this week's RHWE event.

There is another chance to do good this week with Charlotte's Thursday litter pick. Get along if you can!

Snapped, cackled and dropped

Monday 17th January 2022

Stop what you are doing and immediately go and give Alfie a big cheer. After signing up to GoodGym last summer, he finally made it along to his first ever GoodGym happening with only mild cajoling by Dan!

On what was a freezing cold evening we were actually pleased to have the hill of Westgate Road to contend with as we set off on a leafleting task to promote a community event for Reviving the Heart of the West End. As with all good GoodGym tasks this was a team effort, with Paul collecting the leaflets and handing them over to me, myself Aimee and Michael walking, while Dan and Alfie ran.

Squad!

We definitely add "leaflet experts" to our collective CV and we talked about how quickly we can get this task done now as well as having our favourite types of door, path and gate. Rock and Roll Mondays, eh!

I had the unfortunate experience of trapping my finger in a letter box as it SNAPPED shut, and we had a sympathetic LOL at Aimee as she had the awkward moment of posting a leaflet at the same time a man opened a door. (CACKLE)

In just 20 minutes, 200 leaflets were DROPPED across four streets so we have a set plan to finish next week. I would love to see you back for this one, its such a satisfying task. We were definitely warmer by the end of this one and knew we had really made a difference by spreading the word to so many homes that will hopefully get involved.

PS: also discovered tonight, can you believe the film Hairspray is 15 years old?! Random Monday Fact.

Let’s leaf no leaflet undelivered!

Sunday 25th October 2020

Written by Newcastle runner

Ok so they were postcards not leaflets but let’s not let the truth get in the way of a good pun on such a beautiful autumn morning!

The clocks went back last night and three Newcastle GoodGymers used their extra hour to deliver postcards advertising a great organisation, Reviving the Heart of the West End - supporting people to find their dream job, access the right training course or set up a business.

Despite some puzzling street layouts and locked gates (to whole streets, not just individual houses!) slowing us down we delivered 200 postcards in under an hour (so we still have an extra few minutes to enjoy today!) The time flew by, not least as Liz and I were intrigued by a grammar lesson from Michael, educating us regarding the correct use of the words between and amongst. This led to a general discussion bemoaning the decline of the correct use of grammar and spelling these days, which means I’m rather conscious of the content of today’s run report! Have I passed Michael and Liz?

Happy Sunday everyone!

Purrfect Postcard Posting

Sunday 11th October 2020

Written by Aimee (she/her)

On Sunday morning four goodgymers set off around Byker to deliver information postcards, to help get the word out about Reviving the Heart of the West End. The aim of this brilliant charity is to see people in jobs they love, being their own boss, or employing more people as a result of their business growing.

We mostly stuck together as a group me and Miranda doing one side of the road, Katie and Charlotte doing the other. We did get a bit split up at one point as me and Miranda took a diversion down a side street to get a few more houses in and I got distracted by a very cute cat, he wasn’t that interested in the leaflets though! Distracting animal aside (including a couple of other cute cats and a very yappy dog) we managed to deliver a respectable 200 postcards in 40 minutes!

Well done Charlotte who completed her first community mission – give her a cheer! If you would like you get involved join Louise in two weeks time to help deliver another 200 postcards for this great charity, this time in the West End and Central area of the city.
