William Morris Big Local

Bringing together local talent, ambition, skills and energy to make the area an even better place to live.

William Morris Big Local aims to bring together the local talent, ambition, skills and energy from individuals, groups and organisations who want to make their area an even better place to live. The Big Local plan focuses on five priority areas as identified by local people during consultation. We want to improve:

  • community spaces
  • local economy for individuals and businesses
  • younger and older generations working together
  • green spaces & the local environment
  • communications across the ward

22 GoodGymers have supported William Morris Big Local with 12 tasks.

Little person delivers “Big Local Newsletter”

Wednesday 8th March 2023

Written by Charlotte

One Goodgymer (Charlotte) delivered 300 William Morris Big Local Newsletters. Despite anticipating being hungover while completing the task, this was happily not the case.

The weather was chilly but not raining, and fortunately there were no dog related incidents.

All leaflets on the round were delivered and the extras returned to the RV point on Elmsdale Rd.

Cold hands but warm hearts on the Big Local news drop

Wednesday 7th December 2022

Written by Sarah Whitehouse

Five jolly Goodgym-ers (Katrina, Rachel, Rowena, Sarah and Tony) braved the cold temperatures and hit the streets of Walthamstow to deliver community news magazines for William Morris Big Local, a fabulous, resident-led community initiative that supports, runs and funds projects in the William Morris ward to make a positive difference to the area and its people.

We pounded the pavements for an hour or so, going door to door until our fingers went numb, and we covered some good ground. We all gained a bit of extra respect for our local posties, and the community news looked so interesting that we each took a copy home for a bit of bedtime reading!

Special kudos and a huge welcome go to the amazing Rachel, who moved to London a mere FOUR days ago and joined Goodgym immediately as a way to get to know people in her new community. That’s the spirit, Rachel! We sincerely hope that tonight’s chilly mission didn’t put you off, and that we’ll see you again very soon!

Well done to everyone who joined – together we made light work of our task. This was our last Wednesday group run of the year, so Merry Christmas all, and let’s hope 2023 brings some more brilliant missions our way!

Walking and Talking and Delivering for Big Local

Wednesday 20th July 2022

Written by Redbridge runner

A lovely cool evening for a long walk around the block to help deliver William Morris Big Local newsletter!

Three of us met at the Greenleaf Church and went to collect the newsletters. We managed to cover a good section of the area and almost delivered the whole heavy box of newsletters. As it was three of us we couldn't pair up so we had to improvise by mixing and matching the sides we were on so that we all could talk to each other and make progress equally. We actually got into a really nice rhythm and found ourselves being 'in the zone' and it really felt like a workout by the end of it walking so much. We managed to have some chats and got a few hellos from passers by as well!

Overall a great task and it was great to have a small but perfectly synchronised team tonight! We finished back at Greenleaf and then ran (Ros and Rebecca) and cycled (me) back home! A nice active evening out!

As we were so focused there were no photos!

Taking an Elfie

Wednesday 15th December 2021

Written by Redbridge runner

This was an unseasonably warm winter evening so we took easy jogging around whilst delivering Big Local newsletters!

Think we all appreciate a lot more what post men and women do - some of those postboxes had teeth!!

It was a really social and chatty run and despite many questionable photo-taking attempts, we managed to take a decent, ahem, elfie... 

Top tips for posting flyers

Wednesday 1st December 2021

Written by Ruby Daly

Picked up leaflets the day before and set off at midday hoping to get finished before the predicted rain. My top tips for posting flyers: No. 1 - wear gloves, some of those letter boxes haven't eaten for days. No. 2 - make sure you remember your headphones, you can get a lot of good listening done in that time. No. 3 - afterwards stretch as if you'd been for a 5k run, all that walking, bendind and reaching is a workout. No 4 - try to enjoy it (even though the pics tell a different story)!

You got mail!

Wednesday 8th September 2021

Six lovely goodgym runners made swift work of delivering the Big Local magazine this week. Its a newsletter written and put together by the local community. The Big Local do so much to help the local community - so we love helping them to get this out to the community. I had come prepared with six roads worth of magazines all bagged up and ready and the team quickly got the job done! We then went for a well deserved drink to celebrate fellow goodgym member Ros birthday! Well done everyone - hope to see you all again soon. Pippa
