Green Back and Sides

Sunday 23rd July 2023

Written by Sevan

Kash, Madhan and Sevan made their way to Wolf Fields Urban Nature Reserve for the second part of their bird hide creating epic. Andrew, the task owner from A Rocha, had stocked up on green paint and brushes ready for the team to finish painting the hide.

A Rocha had been busy introducing local children to the plants in the nature reserve so hadn't been able to move the hide forward in the last couple of months. Today's task was to complete painting the back, sides and top using a new tin of green paint while Andrew used a different colour to paint the entrance.

The team started by moving the Anderson shelter from it's original location to somewhere with fewer weeds so that they could reach down to the bottom of the walls. No one could comfortably reach the top of the shelter, so they hunted for a platform to step onto, finding a low table and a bench to help them out. With the added reach, they made quick work of painting the corrugated top and sides, plus the flat panels at the front and back. The GoodGymers were even given the privilege of leaving their mark on the hide to thank them for their help.

Before leaving, Andrew took the trio on a tour of the reserve, past some huge blackberry bushes with sweet, juicy fruits on them and into the orchard where they sampled some local Norwood Green plums, straight from the tree. The apples in the orchard weren't ripe yet, so there'll be a taste test of those on the next visit.
