Westminster Report written by Polly Skeats-Beswick
Well what a smashing start to LSE's Summer School Run Club. LSE will be hosting these Wednesday night runs across the summer. On week one we had 8 lovely runners turn up to run 8.8km (5.47miles for those Mile minded.)
After introductions and a warm up in Lincoln's Inn Fields, we headed off on our sightseeing run. This first took us down to the river, past Temple and Embankment Station. Then we diverted up to Trafalgar Square to see Nelson's Column and round to onto The Mall - where the very famous London Marathon finishes up. This took us down to Bucking Palace were we took a group photo - all ladies and the chaps didn't fancy the photoshoot.
From then we skirted back around the other side of St James Park up towards Churchills War Rooms. This way took us up to Parliament Square to see big ben wrapped up like a present whilst it's having restoration work done. This work was started in Aug 2017 and isn't due to finish until 2021. We also saw Wesmister Abbey, where the royals famously get married.
Following on from this, we battled our way over Westminster Bridge through the throngs of people to reach the Sea Life London Aquarium. Then we passed by the London Eye and on to the Southbank. It quietened down after this point, so going past the Oxo tower and Tate Modern was a lot easier to navigate. We used the Millenium Bridge to cross back over the river. This gave us another great view of the Thames and St Paul's Cathedral. We ran down the river until we reached Blackfairs and then we went in land a bit to come back to Temple Station. There was a great hill from the tube station to the Strand. The runners practiced their hill running here, using their arm swing for momentum. We used the last bit of the Strand to get a couple of sprints in and the we were back to base.
We finished off with much needed stretches by the union. Great effort and running from everyone.
Hope to see you all next week!
