With a dig dig here, and an oink oink there

King's College London Report written by Alyx Murray-Jackman

Before running a total of 4km on our Tuesday evening, we heard about some upcoming events to keep an eye out for! GoodGym are heading to the Hackney Half on May 20th, and if you'd like to enter the event then let me know as we have a discount code! Some runners are also volunteering at the event by hosting one of the water stations - we already have about 15 volunteers, so let me know if you'd like to be added to the list.

As a small group we managed to dodge all the commuters really quickly, and everyone kept up with our speedier than usual pace. We did some sightseeing en route as we picked our way through Westminster, and over the bridge, spying the London Eye and Big Ben. After a brisk 2.2km, and some red light squat challenges, we arrived to meet Roddy, the Oasis Farm Waterloo manager, who welcomed us in and showed us what we needed to do. Oasis Farm Waterloo is a fantastic space in the centre of the city where people from every background can come to enjoy the space, animals and plants. They are working to build a safe and inspiring neighbourhood and run initiatives, such as one where local school children can come and learn about the importance of mental health whilst taking care of the new piglets.

The task: We had 3 big planters to move. This involved removing the soil & bricks, moving the planter, and then replacing the soil and bricks! Now last time we visited the farm we had about 15 runners, and managed to move 3 planters, so we had our work cut out. Here at GoodGym King's we love a challenge, and got stuck in straight away. After lots of hard work, and a very good back & arm workout, we managed to get all 3 moved in just 50 minutes - something that would take their usual volunteers a week or two to do, so Roddy was really grateful!

We spent a few minutes in awe of the little lambs and piglets that were at the farm. Last time we came it was dark so we could hear them all, but couldn't see them. With the evenings getting brighter, we can enjoy the visual elements of our runs much more!

We headed straight back to King's, over Waterloo Bridge, and did a full body stretch after all our hard work.

I won't be about next week, but remarkable Rachel will be here in my place, so you'll be sure to have fun! You can sign up for next week here.

Grandmaster Trash and the Eager Eight

King's College London Report written by Alyx Murray-Jackman

Tonight we had a change in task and we decided to take part in the Great British Spring Clean by trying out some "trogging" along the Thames Path. Trogging is our version of the new Scandinavian running-rage "Plogging" (plastic jogging). Runners take out a bag with them and pick up plastic as they run, to help keep the local streets clean. As we were picking up all kinds of trash we decided to call our version "trogging".

After marvelling at how light it now is in the evenings, and before explaining about the task this evening we welcomed a new runner to the crew - everyone give James a cheer for joining us to do good and get fit! We also heard about the monthly "Rave Runs" that King's Sport are putting on (next one is 28th March!) and about the GoodGym Shindig, which you'll need to sign up for by Sunday if you want the chance to come along. After the news, and while we were warming up, we found out what the best treasure item each person has ever found. With answers ranging from a double fossil to £80, we were hoping to get a good haul from the London streets tonight!

We headed out towards Blackfriars Bridge at a nice and steady pace whilst picking up rubbish en route. Just 5 minutes in our bags were half full and we had amassed 2 wine bottles, several coffee cups and a lot of screwed up old meeting notes! We crossed over the river and wound our way around the Waterloo area, amongst all the commuters, before finding our way to Bernie Spain Gardens, where we stopped off to do a quick sprinting exercise. After lots of hard work and fantastic technique from the team we headed back to King's over Waterloo Bridge, picking up litter along the route again.

We made it back to King's with 4 full bags of litter, 4km of running under our belts and 8 pairs of tired legs, but we still had a bit of time and energy to fit in a quick core workout - fab work everyone! We didn't find any significant pieces of treasure while we were out and about today, but Rachel did bag herself a wonderful Mother's Day balloon.

We will be meeting at the same place and time again next week, so come and join us for more fun, getting fit and doing good!

Lunch Ladies

King's College London Report written by Alyx Murray-Jackman

Tonight we were spreading the word about about a lunch for the homeless that KCL are organising on Sunday. We just kept on running until we had handed out all our invitations to the local homeless community, with some runners clocking up an impressive 6km.

We celebrated the running successes of everyone from the weekend, with a few GoodGym King’s runners completing the Big Half – congrats Mara (plus others that couldn’t make it tonight!). The news didn’t stop there though, we heard about the Camden group run this evening that you should all sign up to here, the MARCH SOCIAL in Greenwich on Thursday which you can find out about here, the running fitness sessions in Green Park which are going to be on every Thursday in March at 6.45pm – sign up to the next one here AND the GoodGym Shindig, which you can read more about here - so many fantastic things happening with GoodGym at the moment!

The task: We ran around Covent Garden, down the Strand, over the footbridge by Embankment, around Waterloo, back over Waterloo Bridge and to Temple Gardens - so many areas covered in just one evening! While we were running we were on the look out for any homeless people to hand out our invitations to. The invites let them know about a free lunch that is going on at KCL this Sunday, with free haircuts, clothes donations and a game of bingo included - all for the local homeless community. We even managed to sneak in some technique work en route, working on the "pocket to socket" arm drive whilst heading over Waterloo Bridge.

If you're keen to volunteer on Sunday, we've put the mission up on the GoodGym website, so you can help out with the lunch (you don't need to be DBS checked!). Sign up here.

For more GoodGym action, make sure you come along next week!
