Southwark Report written by Liv Parker-Scott
Back for the fourth year running, GoodGym once again partnered up with Team London, the Mayor's Programme for volunteering and social action, to run and do good all over London!
In just a couple of hours 11 different charities and community organisations were helped by over 130 people who wanted to get fit and do good.
That's over 100 hours worth of volunteering in just one morning!
Team Bermondsey Community Kitchen - Led by Southwark Run Leader, Dom Tooze
This is why volunteering matte-ers!
On Tuesday morning, 6 GoodGym runners headed off from City Hall and ran a gentle 2km away to Bermondsey Community Kitchen. This is a marvellous organisation which offers a community cafe and free training facility providing food preparation and cooking qualifications to Southwark residents. Over time, they have had to fill in lots of holes in the walls around their kitchen upstairs; we were asked to paint over where these had been filled in, to make the room look nicer for those using it. The group got stuck in right away - there was some great roller technique used to tackle the bigger gaps, while others took brushes to the the smaller bits around wall fixtures and signs. Once we had tackled this, we checked in with the team at the Kitchen before running back to City Hall, stopping off briefly to enjoy some gentle fitness games including Squat Squat Goose.
Team Poppy for The Royal British Legion - Led by Greenwich Trainer, Sarah Place
Packing boxes with pop-ease!
The annual poppy packing parade was underway again as GoodGym headed off to support The Royal British Legion. After a little warm up on the city hall grounds we set off on our 2km run and arrived shortly after at St Anne's Church in Bermondsey where we were greeted by the wonderful RBL team who had everything set up ready for us. Their instructions this year were simple... everyone pack 22 boxes each and we will hit our 1000 target... so without much hesitation everyone got cracking and the frenzy began. I know there were a few project managers in the group who usually wouldn't be able to deal with such chaos but well done for embracing it and getting the job done! 30 minutes later and WE HAD DONE IT! We even managed to dismantle all the old boxes and the tables! Nice one! A little jog back to city hall and a stretch to finish off... just in time for the rain to arrive! Great work everyone!
Team Spitalfields City Farm - Led by Camden Trainer, Paul Bown
Goat to get moving
13 GoodGymers ran up to help Spitalfields City Farm. Nestled behind Whitechapel station this fantastic farm is an oasis of all things growing - some new lambs, plenty of veg/flowers and some big pigs called Watson and Holmes! Upon our arrival we met the wonderful Jenny and Michelle who were our contacts for the day. They split it us into three groups doing the following:
Everyone did a great job - nice one! We then headed back to base for a group stretch and lots of cheers!
Team Get Kids Going - Led by Brent Run Leader, Danny Cane
You'd better beleaflet
15 volunteers traversed Tower Bridge to help-out at the offices of Get Kids Going in Whitechapel. Get Kids Going help provide the equipment needed for disabled children to participate in sports. Part of their fundraising is race sponsorship, so our volunteers were preparing post to go out to promote that.
With three teams and three tables, they circled them round and round sequencing leaflets for 40 minutes, til they'd nearly worn a groove in the carpet. Meanwhile, the kind staff at Kids Get Going filled everyone in on the nature of their work, and how important the fundraising is.
With stacks of boxes of post now ready to go out, our hosts presented everyone with a certificate to show their gratitude, and we set off back to City Hall for a stretch.
Team Look Ahead - Led by Hackney Run Leader, Ed Field
Miles ahead
11 runners headed South to Look Ahead, an amazing charity which offers support and accomodation services to thousands of people across London. After a quick warm up of jog around the concrete block, high knees around the concrete block, butt kicks around the concrete block and side skips, yep, around the concrete block we were off into the cool air. Big special mention to the guys from Onfido joining in for their first ever GoodGym run. First of many we hope!
Upon arrival we were quickly split into groups and given our orders. A small group worked in the garden cutting back trees, sweeping leaves and preparing some potted plants ready for planting. The rest of us were up flights of stairs clearing out what seemed like an endless number of cupboards full to the brim with clutter. I've never seen so many CRT televisions and had definitely forgotten how heavy those things were. 40 minutes later we all had a serious sweat on and that amazing feeling that comes from knowing we achieved something which would have taken the staff all day. As we ran back to City Hall I've never been more grateful for some cooling drizzle!
Team BOST - Led by Wandsworth & Hounslow Trainer, Ana Hancock
'No ifs, no butts'
Team BOST (Bankside Open Spaces Trust) kicked off the session with a dynamic warm up which saw us test our coordination as well as raise our heart rates and featured some pretty impressive airborn star jumps! Nicely warmed up for our run we set off for Millennium Green, weaving in and out of the people on the pavements, and discussing some of the great running you guys have been doing. Don't forget, you're always welcome at any of the GoodGym group runs taking place throughout the week all over the country - not only do you get a good workout and a run in, but a chance to support the community you live in too. Bonus! After 2.7km and thanks to some of the Experian Team who helped out with the route and so rescued the rest of us from any dodgy map reading, we arrived at our destination to find Joe and Laura from the Trust, an environmental charity working with people in London to transform open spaces, waiting for us with litter pickers and gloves. We set straight to work, focusing on those terrible cig butts that are, it turns out, just about EVERYWHERE. These grim little filters are a form of plastic called cellulose acetate, and can take 18 months to 10 years to decompose. They are full of toxins, which enter the ground and waterways and damage organisms. The good news is, that after half an hour of hard work in the park, there were considerably fewer of the little pests, so after a quick photo, we celebrated with a short but intense core blast which focused on strengthening those abs. Great to run with all of you - hope to see you on a run soon!
Team AGE UK - Lef by Barnet Trainer, Damian Mitchell
"...and that's the tea"
Ten GoodGymers made up team Age UK to run to their Southwark branch. On arrival, our contact Brenda explained the tasks and we got to work: Steve and Tim trimmed the garden with lawnmower and strimmer; John and Shawi helped make and serve tea for visitors in the lounge; and Ellie, Liv, Clair, Alana and Samantha got to work cleaning the vans. It was quick work with the team making a big impact in a really short space of time. After half an hour we left the lawn tidy, the vans clean, and the tea and toast all served. We said our goodbyes and set off back to base at City Hall, via a quick strength session, for stretches and high fives.
Team Hope UK - Led by Steve Lee
Cracking down on drugs (education packs)
11 Volunteers set off on one of the longer runs of the day to help Hope UK, with over 8km covered running across Tower Bridge (which always feels special) and winding along through the streets of Whitechapel and back again. For 160 years(!) Hope UK have been supporting young people in London and across the country with everything from establishing youth centres to drugs education. Today we were helping with the latter, packing dummy versions of various drugs into packs that will be used to help educate young people on drug misuse. Quickly forming into production lines, we managed to make short work of the task and after taking on juice, water, biscuits and chocolates that the lovely Hope UK team provided for us, we headed back for a stretch and a cool down. Well done everyone, and special thanks to GG Richmond’s Jack for back-marking!
Team Mary’s Living & Giving - Led by Ealing Trainer, Olivia Parker-Scott
Run, walk and be Mary!
A small but perfectly formed team of 4 GoodGymers ran and walked our way to Mary’s Living & Giving charity shop for Save The Children. We took on a variety of tasks around the shop including cleaning the windows, steaming clothes, dusting the shop floor and organising the storage area. These are lots of little tasks that the volunteers at the shop struggle to get done otherwise so we were delighted to be able to offer some extra hands today. We were rewarded for our efforts with some lovely savoury muffins made by one of the regular volunteers at the shop, what a lovely way to spend the morning!
Team Bliss - Led by GoodGym CEO Ivo Gormley
Blissful running
8 runners left City Hall to run to help the premature baby Charity Bliss. Bliss do incredible work supporting babies who are born premature of sick. This year they have 190 people who are riding the Ride 100 event on August the 4th. The staff wanted to write to each of them wishing them good luck, but it would have taken two of them a whole day to complete. Bliss' headquarters are in Southwark - so we headed out from City Hall after a leisurely warmup and introductions. We were met by the Bliss volunteer manager who ushered us (up five flights of stairs) into their offices where are task awaited us. We were joined by Debbie Weekes-Bernard, the deputy Mayor for social integration who got stuck in helping us to complete the 190 cards in 45 minutes. Having got the job done, in just over the target time, we headed back out on the streets narrowly avoiding a downpour.
Great work from Mridula, Sheilly, Taylor, Sarah, Shona, Bryon and Sylvia and Debbie meant the run and the task were all done in 90 mins, including clocking 3km on the way.
Team Sense - Led by GoodGym Croydon Trainer, Conroy
The Six Sense
6 GoodGymers kicked off with a warm up on the green in front of City Hall, where the group did some jump squats, lunges and star jumps, all in the aim of getting them ready to embark on the 1.9 miles run to Walworth Road. The group was mixed with runners and non runners we all ran along together.
Although a few members of the group were familiar with Walworth Road none of us could figure out if the number started at the top or bottom so any hopes we had of taking a shortcut to our destination was out the window.
We arrived at the Sense Charity Shop where Carolyn had been awaiting our arrival, she had already prepared the the buckets with water and cleaning products for us to get stuck in, but not before she explained what she wanted us to do and also gave the group a small talk about the Charity Shop and they do with the proceeds made in the shop. The group paired up into two and each pair worked on a section of the shop front giving it a good clean. On completion the staff of the shop thank us for what we had done and bid us farewell.
They started out as strangers, however by the time the task had completed they were all laughing and chatting away with each other, for GoodGymers we know all too well that feeling, the GoodGym fairy dust had been sprinkled.
On the return journey back to City Hall we incorporated a few sprint drills to give the non GoodGymers a taste of what a GoodGym fitness session is. They all put on their game face and rise to the challenge, even when I asked for the pace to be upped by the lead runner.
We arrived back at City Hall in time for our Curfew did our cool down stretches, took one final group photo and said our goodbyes. GoodGym Southwark look out there may be two new sign ups coming your way!

Westminster Report written by Ed Field (he/him)
Back once again! For the third year in a row GoodGym partnered with Team London, the Mayor's Programme for volunteering and social action, to run and do good all over London. This year 134 runners marked national volunteers week in style with 12 tasks and 100 hours of volunteering!

This is what each group got up to...
Team Aldgate Play and Heritage project led by Ealing trainer Olivia Parker-Scott
A Monday afternoon in Aldgate became GoodGym Ealing on tour as five of our usual suspects grouped together to take on flyering for Aldgate Community Events. At the last minute we also happily adopted GoodGym hero Beth Nelson who is know throughout the GoodGym-asphere! We started our journey by running over the iconic Tower Bridge before continuing on to Aldgate to help them promote their local festival happening in a couple of weeks. The task owner was so delighted to see us and enthusiastically told us all about the event and what they are doing to help the local community. She armed us with stacks of flyers before sending us off in three different directions to distribute them to local businesses. Everyone came back 40 minutes later with empty hands and lots of positive feedback with stores, hairdressers, barbers, newsagents, coffee shops (the list goes on!) all happy and interested in supporting the event. Beth and I even managed to swing it so our route went past the brick lane beigel shop, a treat of beigels and donuts were a great reward for our little teams afternoon of hard work and doing good!
Team Blackfriars Settlement led by Croydon run leader Dom Tooze
8 runners ran 5km to Blackfriars Settlement to help clear a store room for them to use in their work with the local community. When we arrived, we met the lovely Tina and Eddie who gave us a brief history of the organisation and what it does. Then they showed us our task; tackling an office upstairs packed with boxes of files, old furniture, and even bags of Christmas decorations. The group got on it right away, passing boxes corridors, carrying some bits to a storage area out back, and making light work of the task (which Tina told us would have taken them ages without our help). Afterwards, we ran back to City Hall, and enjoyed a couple of fitness games (always love a bit of Duck Duck Goose) before we stretched off and headed off.
Team Hope led by Lewisham run leader Conroy Barnett
Mondays for some GoodGymers would be group run day where a sea of red t-shirts would be bobbing along the pavement to a local community group to help with a task or two. For those who did group runs on a Monday this was an opportunity to gain a double deed. For GoodGymers it was just a regular thing to be out there doing what we are known for volunteering and helping in the fight against isolation. So the commencement of national volunteer week did not really affect what we are used to, however, it did bring together the Mayor’s office and GoodGym together again for the 3rd year in a row working together and getting new volunteers and employers to donate their time to some worthy causes.
"How much do you know about drugs?"
"Can you identify them?"
I led a group of 8 volunteers some new to volunteering and some who volunteers on a weekly basis to Hope UK, a charity which provides drugs and alcohol training to children, young people parents and other organisations. After running 2.5 miles we arrived at our destination rearing to go where we were met by our contact who had laid out an assortment of bags with drugs (replicas) and numbers. Unlike those who will be tested on their knowledge of identifying which is which we had a head start in that we were told what they were and got the corresponding numbers to each pack. We all mucked in and got to number the packets of drugs then bagged them up in batches of 10s. After the numbering and sorting was completed we even had time to do some cut outs this was for another service offered by hope in which they work with young children in identifying body parts (operations) but with arrows. As usual time ran really quickly and it was time for us to head back to City Hall. Debbie thanked us for a job well done and informed us that what we had done in under an hour would have taken their volunteers a lot longer to do as we as a team put in 8 and a bit hours of work as oppose to an hour here or there by the regular volunteers that normally helps.
Team Get Kids Going led by Wandsworth and Hounslow trainer Ana Hancock
The nine of us that made up Team Get Kids Going kicked off our run with a warm up overlooking the Thames, noting how beautifully our bright blue tshirts matched the painting on Tower Bridge perfectly. How satisfying. After a round of squat jumps, high knees, twists and heel flicks, we had a quick discussion about the best ice cream flavours (very important) and set off in the direction of our task. Although it was only a mile away, we took the first section over the massively busy Tower Bridge fairly steadily, dodging the crowds, until we could stretch out our legs a bit in the last section of the run - stopping for a few squats along the way of course. We soon arrived at the amazing Get Kids Going - a charity which gives disabled children and young people the opportunity to participate in sport. They provide them with specially built sports' wheelchairs, inspires them to compete in sporting events, from start to paralympic level. Our job tonight was to make up packs of information which will be sent out to runners and cyclists competing in major events to raise money for this great cause. We split into two teams, and got stuck into making up the packs by walking round the table picking up pamphlets in a highly efficient fashion. Half an hour later we had made up no less than 1300 packs, which by anybody's standards is pretty great going! Waving goodbye to the lovely staff, we made our way back to City Hall, stopping only to do a few bursts of Tabata and finishing off with a nice planks, and some even nicer stretches. Brilliant work team!
Team Look Ahead led by Barnet trainer Damian Mitchell
Meeting at City Hall, we were all really excited. It was brilliant to see so many volunteers! After the photo call, we had a quick warm up in our group, and set off over Tower Bridge with Alice backmarking for me. We arrived at our task, needing a quick phone call to double check which door we needed (!), and made our way in.
We were greeted with a hugely warm welcome with juice and waters and shown the garden. It had clearly been a really nice little garden but weeds had overtaken it a bit. We set to work: Stephen and Sophie worked in the back garden trimming back the bigger plants, while Fran, Alice and I worked in the front removing weeds. The time flew by and half an hour later we had filled 9 (!) bags of garden waste.
Catriona at Look Ahead was delighted and can't wait for her next GG visit. We said our goodbyes and set off back to City Hall. We stopped for a very quick fitness session, working on running technique, before arriving back at base for a stretch. The team said they all want to try a bit more GG tourism and see more groups and areas now they've met so many people across London (and beyond) at the event.
Team Royal British Legion led by Greenwich trainer Sarah Place
48 runners ran 4km to help the Royal British Legion make poppy appeal boxes! We had the biggest group of all the charities but lucky we did as we had a mammoth task! The pressure was on to make, fill, label and pack 1000 poppy appeal boxes, in attempt to beat last years number of 986. We had a nice little jog down to Guildhall and as soon as we arrived, the production line began. Everyone got stuck in and got straight in the zone, working as fast as they could on their stations! We had one group making boxes, one group filling them with poppies, one group labelling and some people packing and transporting them to where they needed to be. It was amazing to witness and lovely to see everyone helping each other out. If one station was struggling, the labour was redistributed to keep the machine running smoothly! We had 40 minutes to complete the task and after just 30 we were done, absolutely incredible!!! Can't wait to see those boxes all over London in a few months time! Let's up the target for next year shall we? 1500???
Team Sense led by Redbridge Trainer James Poole
The seven members of team Sense were given the mission to clean the windows of the charity shop in Camberwell. With two miles to cover to get to the shop, the team wasted no time it getting going - only stopping briefly for glute activation drills on some well-placed steps. Heading south down Tower Bridge road the group bonded over the love of running and doing good and before long they arrived at the Sense charity shop a little sweaty but ready to get stuck in. Armed with soapy water, a squeegee and plenty of cloths the gang set to work cleaning the windows and paint work. In less that 20 minutes the job was done and the team were jumping for joy. Even better still there was still time for a short fitness session in Faraday Gardens where the crew learnt about high-five fartlek intervals from Goodgym trainer James. All that was left was a couple of miles of easy running back to base and some light stretching. 8km done and some super shiny windows in Camberwell, great work team!
Team Age UK led by Hammersmith and Fulham trainer Polly Skeats-Beswick
Our task for the day was to help out at Southwark Age UK which was 2km away from City Hall. Once we arrived, the gang got started straight away helping take down a fabric gazebo in the garden. This took less than two mins. So then 5 people were draughted into helping clear up after the centre’s activity room. This involved wiping down tables, rearranging chairs and packing away bit and bobs. The other half of the group pulled everything out of the garden shed and repacked it; whilst Nykolette mowed the lawn. Great to see so many goodgymers on the run, including Debs from Bristol, plus 3 chaps from GSK came down all the way down from Hertfordshire. Lovely stuff!
Team Spitalfields City Farm led by Lambeth trainer Katie Welford
We went to Spitalfields city farm, a true oasis that has been going for over 49 years in the heart of the city. Our job was to take buckets of water from the duck pond, which needs emptying and using it to water all of the lovely plants and veg across the farm. Two member donned wellies and we were off to work. It was a real work out for the arms carrying the buckets but we made a real dent in the pond water levels. At the end, the pigs got let out of their daytime pen and we got to race them up to their night time pens. They were getting lunch so they ran very fast. And with that it was back to base.
Team South London Mission led by Hackney run leader Ed Field
10 runners headed south to run 3km and help out the South London Mission. The task was peak GoodGym - fill a skip with as much junk as possible in 40 minutes. On arrival we were met by Peter who has been helping out at the organisation for 10 years. He explained that the Mission had been based at Bermondsey Hall since 1900 (!!) offering a variety of outreach services to people in the local community.
The Mission receives LOADS of donations, not all of which can be used and so had built up an impressive pile of items which were sadly destined for the skip. Within seconds our 10 heroes had formed a human chain shifting heavy items out from the building, up a ramp and into the skip. Old mattresses, broken wardrobes and some vintage typewriters all made their way outside. In no time the skip was full and after a huge thanks for the team we were off on our way.
It was a short run back to base and so naturally we stopped off for some ab-aching circuits. Leg raises, sit ups, burpies and my favorite, Russian twists all helped build up a sweat. Before long we were back at City Hall, stretching our legs and feeling proud at a job well done.
Team Bermondsey Community Kitchen - Market Place led by Redbridge run leader Peter Van Tongeren
After a joint warm-up with the other part of team Bermondsey expertly led by Ben, our squad assembled for the trip down to the community kitchen. With a bit of trickery those walking arrived in about the same time as the runners. Gathering some tools the team got split up: 3 went to weed, turn over & plant a sizeable section of garden hidden in a corner of the estate 2 got to grips with the flower pots outside the front door of the kitchen 5 went up the road to move, fill, paint & plant several beds on a different estate
Working hard we lost track of time, a 4pm return to City Hall was obviously a dream... returning to the kitchen we realised that we didn’t make sure to set a meeting time... with three teams in 3 hidden locations, it seemed impossible to find each other and coordinate a group return, so we improvised and went back in sections, all made it back with a smile on their face!
Team Bermondsey Community Kitchen - Crol & Co led by Greenwich run leader Ben Cooper
A subteam of Citigroup set out to Crol and Co Coffee to do some community gardening. It transpired, there was some running pedigree in this group. Anmol runs a sub 19 parkrun, and Winston had done the London Marathon, albeit it a few years ago.
We were met there by Susan who is active in Bermondsey, and has taken it on herself to beautify the local outside communal areas. Susan tasked us with planting 30 roses from pot to ground. First, we prepared the ground by weeding, and Winston gave the whole area a rake to break the soil down. Then garden trowel in hands everyone set about digging. I figured this lot might be competitive so challenged them to see who could get the most roses in the ground. With the added pressure of a time limit everyone was on their hand and knees working hard.
Domino! The team brought the task in under time. I know Susan really appreciated everyone's efforts, and it is going to look blooming marvellous when the roses grow. I hope local people will borrow pride from the rose garden, we did.
All in all, out and back we ran 4km.
Lastly, it was encouraging to hear a few of the group were thinking of continuing their running. Do.

Westminster Report written by Ed Field (he/him)
Well that was a lot of fun!!
At about 9.15am I was standing in a large empty room at City Hall. It was blissfully quiet. Not for long. A few eager runners started arriving, checking in before collecting their t-shirt and finding their task for the morning. Soon more came and before I knew it there was queue forming outside and the noise of chatter and laughter was deafening. This was GoodGym's biggest ever run to mark National Volunteers Week.
After a warm welcome by Laura Brown from Team London and Matthew Ryder, Deputy Mayor for Social Integration, Social Mobility and Community Engagement we were quickly outside and into the warm sunshine. We posed for photos and then got ready for the tasks ahead. Read what each of the teams got up to below.
Team Poppies
Weaving between the commuters and unintentionally photobombing tourist photos on London Bridge, a very upbeat and enthusiastic forty-eight runners - led by GoodGym Lewisham trainer Adele - headed over to the splendour of the Guildhall, to help the Royal British Legion. On arrival, we were presented with our task: to construct boxes, fill them with poppies for the Poppy Appeal and to pack these ready for distribution all over London in the autumn. How wonderful to see all of these people, some of whom had only just met, work together so well to smash our task. Admittedly there was a fair bit of competitive fun going on, with volunteers racing to build more boxes than their fellow builders, with boxes piling up around us and a production line of determined workers buzzing around the space. Before we knew it, we had reached our goal, with box-builders being reassigned to help pack poppies and the previously full tables clearing around us. Amazing work everyone, the task was accomplished in just 45 minutes, with an incredible 940 boxes packed and ready to go! Not only did these wonderful people exceed expectations at the task, but they still had enough energy to push themselves further with some squats, knee lifts and an epic plank-off - what a way to start #VolunteersWeek!
Report by GoodGym Lewisham Trainer Adele
Team Age UK Southwark
Team Southwark did the capital proud this morning. After a few dynamic warm ups which included some fancy footwork, a game of chicken or chips (with some dodgy tactics) and even a series of burpees, we set off on the 1.5 mile run to South Age UK with Caroline backmarking. We played dodge the tourist on the way, as well as stopping for some planks, squat holds, a sprint race with a small child, and even a Rocky moment on the steps of a church. Once we got to the beautiful Age UK building, we got stuck into handing round drinks and chatting to the users. A ping pong table appeared, and before long there was a challenger - but sadly not the Lithuanian table tennis champion that was part of our GoodGym team (true fact). It was a heated contest, but Team Age UK flourished with Bill at the bat over our player, Sam. Can't win 'em all! In the heat of the blazing sun it was a quick run back, stopping only to regroup with another team, and to use the water feature at More London to, ahem, 'rehydrate'. Great work today Team Southwark, hope to see you all on a GoodGym run soon!
Report by GoodGym Wandsworth trainer Ana
Team Bost
Today I led a group of 12 to lend a hand (or rather, 24!) to the amazing Bankside Open Spaces Trust. Our group was made of a couple of frequent GoodGym runners, Helen and Alyx, and 9 others who Alyx had brought along from her offices. We ran to the task location a little past Borough station, and had a great briefing from Clive from BOST. We quickly got to work; digging and breaking up hard inhospitable soil, and then scattering and raking across some lovely fresh compost that they'll be able to do some planting in soon! We made our way back, bringing us to 5km altogether. Since we'd finished the task quickly, and ran really well, we had a nice bit of time for our fitness session where we did some core work and then did some exercises at different intensity based on a coin toss. A great run!

Team ALD Life
Our smashing and speedy group of 8 headed to Peckham to help ALD Life sort donations in the basement of their charity shop. The task looked daunting but the team rallied quickly together to get organised whilst Charlie from London Sport steamed out the creases and chose his favourite dress.
In 25 minutes we'd organised all the clothing into lovely neat piles so after a big thank you from Maria and the shop team, we powered back towards Tower Bridge via a partner workout in Burgess Park with commando crawls, planks and loads of other good stuff.
We even managed an extra good deed on the way back as a car had broken down at a junction so runners from Sarah's team and ours grouped together to push it to safety!
Report by GoodGym York trainer Egg
Team Fareshare
10 brave runners ran South East from City Hall towards Deptford. Debs had come all the way from Bristol to take on this 10k. People from at least 6 GoodGym areas were represented.
Fareshare are a national charity that re-distribute food that would be wasted to those who need to eat. It's work has massive impact.
We covered about 5k on the way there, our route taking in Millwall stadium and the Lewisham Refuse and Recycling Centre.
On the way we planned various mayoral policies: including dogs for all, housing solutions and special green connection paths between parks.
We arrived at the task and met Stephanie - she got us into protective boots and high visibility jackets. Looking slick we were introduced to our task: removing ~3400 out of date strawberry pop tarts from the packets and ~4000 out of date chicken and mushroom pies so that they can be turned into pig feed.
We were hugely impressed with the efficiency, scale and dedication of the the Fareshare team: the place is a huge operation with hundreds of volunteers involved every week.
In our 25 minutes we go 70% of the pop tarts done and a bit less of the chicken pies (they had to be unwrapped inside a giant fridge).
Feeling like we'd worked out our ams we ran a simpler route back: along the side of Southwark park and back on Jamaica road.
We'd made some new friends, handled hundreds of pies and poptarts, and completed 9.95km .
Report by GoodGym Tower Hamlets Run Leader Ivo Gormley
Team Aldgate Play & Heritage
Team Aldgate Play & Heritage Project took off over Tower Bridge and met task leader Laura outside an old disused car park that is being transformed into an art gallery and for community workshops. It's still quite grubby and there are lots of grey concrete walls that need more than a lick of white paint. The 21 brilliant runners from TNS UK got straight to work, tackling walls in two areas, as well as bringing lots of 'gubbins' up from a storage cupboard. The gubbins consisted of old suitcases, clothes and a body model, which will all be used for the final installation. INTRIGUING! Once some serious work had been done, along with a bit of strength work to boot, we ran the 1 mile back down to City Hall for some stretches and a round of applause. Great work! Report by GoodGym Lambeth trainer Katie
Team Providence
Our run was only 2km but with plenty of tourists to dodge on Tower Bridge it took us a while to get up to speed. We were heading to Providence Row, a day centre for the homeless that has been around for 150 years. In addition to assisting people with everyday tasks such as getting a shower or using the internet, they also run various training programs including IT, cooking and gardening. The garden is on the rooftop so our task was to transfer a compost delivery up there from the ground floor. With a couple of wheelbarrows and a lift at our disposal we got the job done pretty quickly and then moved on to watering all the plants ahead of a warm weekend.

What a brilliant morning at the Goodgym’s biggest ever run. I waited in anticipation for my allotted team to arrive and arrive they did. After introductions and a small speech from the Deputy Mayor of London it was time to head out of City Hall for some photo's and a pre run warm up. It wasn't long before we were heading off dodging in, out and around the people traffic that blocked the narrow streets heading for Bermondsey. Smiles were in there many as we talked amongst our selves in anticipation of our waiting task. After a short while we were at our destination where we met the awesome Annie who was in charge of the Outreach Food Bank. After short introductions we were lead away down stairs and corridors beneath the building till we reached our task for the morning. We were greeted by a lot, and I mean a lot of food donations that needed sorting into categories. We had a 40 minute time limited and we wasn't going to leave unfinished. So it was all hands on deck to complete our mission. As the clock struck 40 mins we had smashed the task, leaving Annie with a big smile and a massive gratitude towards us. She thanked us personally and we were treated with an awesome goody bag. Thank you so much.
It was time to say our good byes and head back to City Hall. However, everyone that knows me, knows I can't go through a tunnel without the mandatory sit off being imposed, and imposed it was. On arrival to City Hall it was great to see other Goodgym teams arriving back and cooling down. After having a drink, we went into our static stretches and talked about our achievement.
As a trainer for the morning I just want to say thanks so much to my awesome team for pulling together, and absolutely smashing our run and task. What a brilliant morning. Thanks GoodGym 🏻

Team Get Kids Going
After a scenic run across Tower Bridge, we had the honour of meeting the passionate and hardworking team behind the charity Get Kids Going at their office. We heard from them about the support they give to enable disabled children to participate in a wide range of sports (including skiing for the blind, tennis and marathons) from beginners level to Paralympians. Our mission was to put together leaflet packs about the different events runners and cyclists could get involved in to fundraise for the charity. Our target was to make up 600 leaflet packs and we smashed it with a total of 860! Great team of runners, super morning and a happy charity.

Team Dress for Success
What a fun morning I had with the team of ten from Stackla - a social media company. We met up with around 175 other volunteers at City Hall by the Thames and were allocated tasks and routes. Our task involved heading over to Brick Lane to a charity called Dress for Success which has been running worldwide for 20 years and empowers women to achieve economic independence. So over Tower Bridge we headed dodging tourists and traffic until we reached our destination although in the interests of complete disclosure we lost half the group at one point and went to the wrong address but all’s well that ends well and we did arrive with plenty of time to complete the task. The kitchen area in the building had pretty much been demolished leaving pile of breeze blocks which needed to be moved to the patio area. The group obviously work well as a team and quickly sorted themselves into a chain and made quick, if dusty, work of the task. Group photos and selfies were taken and we headed back to City Hall this time without getting lost or losing anybody. It wouldn’t have been a GoodGym session without some fitness work to finish up so we played Heads and Tails – they just loved the burpees and bear walks – and then we ended with a well deserved stretch before heading back into City Hall to collect our bits and pieces. I hope they all enjoyed their session and maybe become part of the GoodGym family!

Team Tower
As Team Tower stepped out of City Hall into the glorious sunshine we could see our destination right in front of our eyes - the magnificent Tower of London. There was just the small problem of the Thames in our way! A lesser team may have nipped across Tower Bridge and been there in minutes but not us - wanting our exercise fix we took the scenic along the river, across London Bridge and back along the Thames Path. Arriving at the Tower a little bit more sweaty than when we left we were thankful for the air conditioned room and jugs of water laid on by our host Sarah from Historic Royal Palaces. They look after 6 extraordinary palaces - can you name them all?
Our mission was simple - pack as many Historic Royal Palace welcome packs as we could. There was also a bonus task of making of badges on what looked like a medieval torture device. This was extremely difficult with only one of group really mastering the technique! We were soon out of envelopes and back into the sunshine. After a quick circuits session of Russian twists, planks and burpees it was back to City Hall.
Fun fact: I learnt some great things on today’s run. All the Beefeaters actually live in the Tower of London. There are houses inside the courtyard for Beefeaters and their families. Also, you need to have served in the army for 22 years to be considered for the job. Wowzers!

Team St Mungo’s
9 of the massive 176 runners headed to St Mungo’s hostel. The charity helps homeless people to find accommodation and provides beds.
After 20 min of running with two other team heading in the same directions as us, we arrived to St Mungo’s but not the right one, it seems that they were 2 St Mungos 500m apart for each other. We finally made it to the good one and were welcome by Fred. Our task was really simple take a square of yard, remove all grass and turn the soil to be able to plant flower and tree.
And after 30 minutes of hard the result was amazing, the classic before / after photo was required and we all appreciated that this will make a big difference to the resident which will have a nice garden now.
We headed back to the city hill, for a last effort and the relay race we splitted in two team of 4 and raced over 100m, it was a great day and everyone really enjoyed :D

Team Bowel Cancer
Team Bowel Cancer ran just under 3k to pack booklets for Bowel Cancer UK into envelopes. The team packed four whole boxes in record time allowing us to run back to base with half an hour to spare, meaning we spent 20 minutes on strength and conditioning work. Lots of running against resistance, some burpees and a few planks to help build stronger runners, ready for the next good deed

Team Sense
It was like a mini GoodGym Greenwich run on Friday with two thirds of the group being from there! We headed to the charity shop as a group after Mridula fed us some biscuits. We had the whole shop front to clean, it was pretty grubby but everyone got stuck in! Pulin broke all of the squeegees because he was cleaning so damn hard, Helen and Dan channeled their inner Cinderella on their hands and knees cleaning the floor and Mridula and Shona gave it their all to clean the postbox! After half an hour it was as good as new! We headed back to City Hall for a cool down, and on the way Pulin even helped push a broken down car, two good deeds for the day!

Team Blackfriars
Team Blackfriars smashed a 4k run by heading over to The Blackfriars Settlement in Rushworth Street where we were warmly greeted by the wonderful Tina and her team who were putting on a brilliant activity day for a group of visually impaired people. After chatting and singing with the group for a little while, two of our team then joined them for a mobility and stretching session using resistance bands whilst the rest of us moved to the kitchen and dining area to set up and lay the tables for the group’s lunch as well as tidying up the cutlery drawers – the food looked fabulous and we were very tempted to stay!
