Local distancing was eggs-hausting

Ealing Report written by Liv Parker-Scott

The challenge was set - With a four day Easter bank holiday weekend of running, walking and cycling to play with, how many locations could GoodGym Ealing members find with only a few clues to go by?

The answer was quite a lot with all of you doing EGGS-traordinarily well! And based on the feedback, I think it's safe to say everyone enjoyed it, got to learn some new things and see some new sites.

"I’ve clearly got too much time on my hands" - Alex

"Inspired idea and good fun!" - Michelle, Tony and Henry

"I enjoyed that, thanks! And my longest run in absolutely ages" - Tom

"If I did (visit any) it was entirely by accident..." - Chris (who claims to have not taken part but his Strava tells me otherwise)

"Chris enjoyed it, because he did loads of Pokémon-ing on the way 🤷" - Jenni

Here are all the answers:

1. Famous film star Charlie Chaplin went to school here - Hanwell Community Centre

2. The Architect Charles Jones designed this central Ealing building - Ealing Town Hall

3. Regularly voted London's best pizza, this famous Ealing pizza restaurant was voted 'the number one pizza to try before you die' in 2013 - Santa Maria

4. Weatherspoon's pub named after famous film producer - The Sir Michael Balcon

5. Famous film studio of which aforementioned film producer was Leader of - Ealing Studios

6. The former home of British Men's Wimbledon Tennis Champion and now famous clothing brand - Fred Perry's Blue Plaque House in Pitshanger

7. Hotel where former Vietnamese Prime Minister worked as a pastry chef/kitchen porter (allegedly, reports are sketchy) - Drayton Court Hotel

8. Site of the 2001 Ealing IRA bomb - Outside Metro Bank on the main Broadway

9. Spot which has a unique engineering feat that crosses a road, a railway line & a canal - The three bridges on Hanwell Canal

10. The White House and home of Polish Prince - The White House on Park View Road

11. Embassy of country lead by dictator and supreme leader Kim Jong-un - The North Korean Embassy on the North Circular

12. Birthplace of British rhythm and blues and the Rolling Stones - Ealing Jazz Club

13. Primary school of Director and Artist who won an Academy Award, BAFTA Award for Best Film, and Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture for 12 Years A Slave - Little Ealing Primary School

14. Either one of the two closest over-ground stations on the whole tube network - South Ealing or Northfields stations

FOURsight and planning preventing Waste

Ealing Report written by Hounslow runner

THREEdom for food waste! The next installment of the 'Day of Good' in Ealing!

On Saturday 18th January GoodGym Ealing hosted a whole day of good deeds in the borough including filling all the volunteer roles at Gunnersbury parkrun, litter picking our way around Gunnersbury Park afterwards, sorting surplus food and organising crates at City Harvest and finishing up for another litter pick in Acton Park.

Part 3:

Onto part 3 of 4 of a fun filled day of Goodgyming with the Ealing Crew and a bunch of Goodgym Tourists from all over London.

Task three day was to help City Harvest London with sorting through there food donations, and sorting through the plastic crates and helping to tidy up their unit.

City London Harvest puts surplus food to good use in a sustainable way. This great charity ensures food that would otherwise have been disposed of goes to help those who are hungry.

-They collect food from a variety of sources from across the food industry.

Pack, Wrap, n Stack!

  • We had a variety of tasks sorting through and restacking several hundred plastic crates was a fun a strenuous start to the task.

Fuelled on by Bananas & some excellent Vegan Biscuits (thanks Liv) we kept going.

We then then moved on to helping to load up their delivery vehicles with crates packed for food deliveries.

We sorted out the frozen food, and separated the fruit and vegetables.

No crying over Spilt Milk.

  • One of the more challenging parts of the day was disposing of the Milk that had passed its sell by date. Two hearty Goodgymmers took on that task.

Various other jobs were completed such as tidying up the food packaging, sorting out pallets and filling up the fridge full of fruit juice drinks.

It was then to a quick pit stop for lunch before heading on to task four of the day!

How ya bin doing?

Ealing Report written by Liv Parker-Scott

TWO good to be true at our next part of our 'Day of Good' in Ealing!

Part 2:

For good deed number two, we stuck around after parkrun to help clean up the lovely park we all love to run in. Splitting into three groups we spread ourselves out around the park to hit up some notorious hot spots for litter - in general the park is in pretty good shape but there's always a few sections that are sadly abused.

We met back at the cafe after to compare our findings, luckily lots of stuff for able to be sent off for recycling but we still found quite a lot of just general waste, at least it's not longer in the park!

Gunning for it!

Ealing Report written by Liv Parker-Scott

ONEderful start to our 'Day of Good' in Ealing!

Part 1:

For good deed number one we filled all the volunteer slots at Gunnersbury parkrun and had GoodGymers from all over London come and support this amazing free weekly event that we love so much. We had people setting up, giving the first timers briefing, marshaling, managing the finish funnel, handing out finish tokens, scanning barcodes, tail walking, pacing as well as helping pack it all away and sort the results.

The full shebang!

If you'd like to help at Gunnersbury parkrun any other week, they always need lovely volunteers to keep the event going every week.

A lush parkrun. First time I have volunteered at a parkrun event and did I pick a mega busy one sorting tokens out! Thank you Liv for organising the day. An ambitious project to put together and execute so very well.

200's company, trees a crowd!

Ealing Report written by Liv Parker-Scott

A TREEmendous start to GoodGym Ealing FIR sure!

Wow, 21 of you came out to kick start 2020 with a 2.5 mile run, a Christmas tree collection (a workout in itself) and a super fitness session, all crammed into 90 minutes!

We welcomed two new runners, go and give Annette and Jessica a big cheer for coming along to their first ever GoodGym session!

But the big news tonight was that we had a 200er in our Midst. Huge well done to Jenni on a massive 200 good deeds! Woah!

After pumping up the group with all the facts about the January Challenge and how to get involved we started with a warm up and whip around of new years resolutions, lots of you with none (keep doing you!) and lots with ambitions to read more, do more exercise and do more GoodGym. We like that!

So after a quick briefing, we headed up (literally, a nice hill to start!) to the Christmas tree collection point in Cleveland Park before dispersing in groups of 4 on the hunt for Christmas trees! We were particularly looking to move any that were obstructing the pavements so that they could be moved on and safely stored at the park for recycling.

I like the double drag technique - Jenni

It wasn't long before Christmas trees were arriving left, right and centre and naturally competitiveness between teams was evident throughout with everyone heading out quickly again to find more.

The final total was an awesome 41 tree saved from the streets with Jenni, Laurianne, Mathilde and Callum making up the winning team with a huge 13 between them!

Time for a quick HIIT session in the park before and nice jog back down to base to finish.

What a way to start 2020!

How can you help with the January Challenge?!

We need to complete as many good deeds and cover as many miles as possible in January so on Saturday 18th we have a whole day of good to take part in! You can sign up for any or all of the below tasks and we'd love to see you there!

  • Part 1 - 8:30am-10am: Gunnersbury parkrun takeover - Volunteer by signing up on this page.
  • Part 2 - 10:30am-11:30am: Litter picking jog around Gunnersbury park after parkrun - Sign up and details here.
  • Part 3 - 12pm-2pm: City Harvest - Join us at City Harvest after the litter pick to help fight food waste - Sign up on this page
