Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Anastasia Hancock (she/her)
After a very festive (and busy!) run through the streets of central London with only a couple of short stops to take pictures of the lights, Khai and I arrived at St Andrew's Club. The oldest youth club in the world was the usual buzz of activity, and after meeting up with Sarah and Chris, we were taken on a tour by former service user and the current chess coach. There was plenty going on, from arts classes to karate, cooking, gym and more!
With so many different activities on offer for local kids, it is little surprise that the youth centre has a lot of equipment. When it isn't being used or its broken, the whole lotfinds it way into the garage, which youth club manager Adrian described as 'the bane of my life'! Our job for the evening was to sort through the sports kit, chairs and many, many bikes before giving it a good clean.
Out came the bikes of all varieties - mountain, road, electric and even some without frames! As we worked we tried to figure out some of the mysterious things we were moving. What was the huge shape-shifting shiny black cylinder? Or the vast metal eight pronged space age looking device?*
After an hour's hard work we gave it a good sweep, loaded everything back in and stood back to admire our work. The seal of approval was given by Adrian who was very pleased with the new big space, so after a quick pic we called it a night.
A huge welcome to Chris who came for his very first GoodGym session - brilliant to have you with us!
Next week we're off to transport food donations to Under One Sky so they can get it out to rough sleepers. Hope you can join us!
(*We later found out they were a fancy modern table and a screen printing machine, respectively!)
