Sunshine, hard work, chips and plenty of pigs.....what's not to like about today's GoodGym Community Mission? GoodGym Huddersfield regulars, Louise Galvin, Ben Godfrey, Tom Elcock and myself, were joined by Annie Hinton, Tom Harman and Egg Cameron for a return visit to the Pigs in the Wood sanctuary.
This time we had a mega task ahead of us to construct a retaining wall of railway sleepers. This plan was to deter the piggy residents from climbing on a muddy bank and hold the bank back.
So it was on with GoodGym Huddersfield's favourite activity....digging! We needed to excavate a straight trench into which the sleepers could be set. Once that was done, it was a case of heaving the heavy sleepers into position and ensuring they were set level and solid.
There was plenty of other jobs to do besides digging and various members of the group also got busy with laying gravel, painting fences and shoveling pig poo!
By the time lunchtime arrived we were all ready for the chips kindly provided by Pigs in the Wood as reward for our efforts. The pigs were ready for lunch too, and you needed your wits about you if your chips were to avoid becoming a piggy dinner!
Another couple of hours of the team pulling together in the afternoon saw our work for the day done. We had managed to get quite a few sleepers set very securely into ground, giving the beginnings of a solid retaining wall, which will surely keep the pigs off the bank.
Well done everyone for your efforts today, it was definitely an epic session but another great job done.
