The first community mission of 2022 in Southwark was a full house. We even had a newbie, Archie, who came to claim his first good deed and has set himself up for another one later this week! Hooray and welcome to GoodGym!

It was a happy New Year to all at the Borough Food Cooperative as not only did we have Archie, Ivy, Laura and Sam from GoodGym, but the Food Cooperative had their own volunteers (4 others) present.

Although, earlier, when Laura and Sam arrived before 13:00, they weren't sure if the session was on as the gate to the church crypt was locked. However, just shy of 13:00, the first volunteer appeared, unlocked the gate and informed us that it was on and that there was an earlier delivery that needed to be sorted. As Archie, Laura and Sam went in, their first task was to sort out the old stock and clean out the trays as some of the fruit and veg had seen better days....

We wanted to get stuck into sorting out the new donated stock, but we had to wait for Marjory to come as she was the big boss for the day. However, along with Jenny (another Food Cooperative volunteer), we started to sort out the dry foods before getting orders and permission from Marjory to put away the fresh veg and food away in certain fridges.

Finally, our last task for the day, was to individually wrap donated bread from Gail's and put today's date as a label on them. Many hands make light work as we finished just under half an hour earlier and those who had bags took away yoghurts, juice, mince pies and anything that the Food Cooperative had in excess.

The food cooperative provides members with low cost food to help reduce food bills and tackle food insecurity. It also reuses surplus food to prevent food being thrown away.
