What is GoodGym?

Want to do something useful with your exercise? GoodGym is no ordinary gym. We're a group of people who get fit by doing good - helping out local charities and community groups with physical jobs like shifting compost and planting trees.

Tonight's session details

St Andrew’s is a community-based youth club and a registered charity which enriches young lives by providing a sense of belonging, fun and informal education to over 500 members each year, where they develop self-confidence, respect for others and build their abilities to contribute to society as good citizens.

There are pockets of extreme deprivation around the Club’s base where many of the members live: The surrounding area is amongst the 20% most deprived neighbourhoods in the country and the Child Poverty Action Group shows Westminster is one of the London boroughs with the highest rates of child poverty, Many local children can’t afford to have friends round for tea or a snack, and can’t afford a hobby or leisure activity.

This is why the youth club is vital. It is one of five Westminster ‘Youth Hubs’ delivering youth-led initiatives. It offers opportunities in a safe, attractive environment for young people to develop educationally, socially and personally through a range of sport, art, excursions and practical skills.

But it needs help from volunteers to keep it running. Andrew, the manager, has asked us to come and help organise the garage so it can be more effectively used to store resources. We will be emptying the space, giving it a tidy and reorganising. This will be a really helpful way to contribute to the important work the centre is doing for young people.

The plan

If you'd like to have a run before the session, I will be leading a scenic run around St James Park, before heading to the youth club. Please join me at 6pm by the National Police Memorial, St James park (The Mall, London SW1A 2WH) for a 3km run.

Alternatively, if you'd like to meet us directly at the task, we'll be at the youth centre at 6:30pm. We'll follow the task with an optional (but very fun!) fitness session and be done by 7:45pm.

FAQ

Not sure you'll keep up? GoodGym is for everyone (18+). Whether you've never run before, or are chasing a marathon PB, you are 100% welcome. We always have a back-marker so no one gets left behind.

70% of GoodGym members start as non-runners so if you're new to this kind of thing you will be supported by people who are all on the same journey. 👍

What do I need to wear? Most of us wear gym/running gear. Make sure you're prepared for the weather.

Don't feel like you're fit enough? Our tasks are simple and fun. There are easy jobs as well as more challenging things for those who want a workout! The choice is always yours.

What to look out for

Make sure you've read our general guidelines for safety for taking part in a GoodGym session.

This is a GoodGym group run. You'll meet other GoodGymers at the start location and run to the task together. If you can't run for more than 15 minutes without stopping or you're worried about any aspect of the session, contact us by email at getinvolved@goodgym.org.

The total distance of this group run is 3km.

Remember that we will be running to and from the task, so you'll only be running for half this distance in one go.

Hi Sebastian - welcome! Great to have you along. I’m afraid there’s not place to store bags before the run but during the task at the youth centre there is a safe spot. As for the run it’s very relaxed, we can accommodate whatever pace everyone feels comfortable with! Any questions at all just drop me a line on ana@goodgym
