Nia, Shauna and I headed to the Windmill on very quiet streets as England v Germany was still going on! ⚽️

Anique was there and had an eclectic selection of jobs to help with as well as some gardening tips:

  • Tasting some sorrel, which is a lemony tasting lettuce. Surprisingly nice 😋
  • Tying some string around the wheat planter to keep it upright in the wind and rain. It's grown to show children who visit where bread comes from!
  • Tying up some tomato plants to their stalks and learning about how to grow successful tomatoes.
  • Pointing some Hop plants in the right direction up the big metal fence at the back. Once they start growing they'll go all over the fence and flower in a months time which will look great!
  • Moved some bags of woodchip to another part of the park, hid them under wheelbarrows and locked them to the gates!
  • And the main event, weeding some planters behind the children's play area. All sorts of things were growing in there which were unwanted: fennel (which is very tall), lemon balm, grasses and a plant with deep roots that I can't remember the name of.... Shauna also deadheaded some chrysanthemums which were 15 years old 🌺 and the planters were transformed.

We left some jobs for the group coming at the weekend including moving a huge bit of timber and weeding the herb garden by the children's play area which we made a brief start on.

Brixton Windmill
A little bit of history in central Brixton!

The Friends of Windmill Gardens (FoWG) were formed in 2003 with three aims: * to get the Grade II listed Brixton Windmill restored and opened for public visits – in 2002 it had been put on English Heritage's buildings at risk register; * to make Windmill Gardens park a more welcoming space for local people; * to have a new education centre at the windmill. Windmill Gardens gained a Green Flag Community Award in 2015 and we have just been judged again so our fingers are crossed that we will retain the award for the next two years.
