Nia is part of a crowd that's making a huge noise. Nia has been cheered by 25 people - that's a round of applause just on their own. We hope they keep it up.

Pebble dash

Wandsworth Report written by Anastasia Hancock (she/her)

A lovely sunny Monday evening, another Monday group run, the first opportunity to do good and get active of the week! What's not to love?

We started off with a warm up and a chat about the World Athletics champs. As we heel flicked and jumping jacked, we tried to guess how many gold medals the GB team had won since the beginning of the event in 1983. Catherine got closest to the answer of 32 - although with another already racked up this year in the heptathlon, the number is going up!

We enjoyed a nice gentle run up to our task for the evening, which was at our very own GoodGym garden in the Omnibus theatre. Progress is definitely being made, and we admired our increasing crop of tomatoes, chard and rocket. Hopefully we'll have some woodchip and more donations soon, so keep your eyes and ears open for any generous companies willing to help out!

We got stuck in watering and weeding, while Paul did a great job of laying down the plastic sheeting on our path. Meanwhile Lorna was carefully sifting and collecting a huge bin full of pebbles. Despite several attempts at sabotage by other people mistaking it for the rubbish bin, it grew by the minute and will no doubt be used to create either an excellent path or an irrigation system.

After 40 minutes of hard work the place was tidier than ever, and ready for our next batch of planting. Great work, team.

We said our goodbyes to some of the group before heading off to Clapham Common for our fitness session which last night featured static holds. A great way to tone and strengthen without impact, we did a series of bear holds, boat poses and planks which worked our major muscle groups before running back to base. Next Monday is bank holiday so we'll be moving our group run to slightly earlier in the day, and if you'd like to stick around for a pub lunch afterwards then everybody is welcome!

Treesy does it

Wandsworth Report written by Anastasia Hancock (she/her)

Our second session at our new GG garden and we’re definitely making progress! While Jeremy and Jamal created a great pathway down the middle of the plot, Paul had brought along some fabulous solar lights and put them up with Matthew. Nia was busy marking out the planting area, and planted the first of our produce- chard and rocket. Watch this space!

The seeds of change

Wandsworth Report written by Anastasia Hancock (she/her)

Last night marked the start of something wonderful - the first session at our own GoodGym Wandsworth garden!

We have officially been given the fabulous opportunity to take over a big area around the back of the Omnibus theatre in Clapham. This brilliant place runs as a charity, but simply doesn't have the resources to be able to maintain a huge raised bed on their property. They have given us the chance to take it over. What's more is that they have a program giving meals to disadvantaged children and teaching them about food in the holidays, so the plan is that we will grow produce to donate to them.

So, after a quick warm up where we discussed what we'd like to see grown, with answers including the highly controversial tomato and cucumber, onions, sweetpeas, rhubarb and more, we were eager to set off and get started.

A short run in the drizzle later and we found ourselves facing the challenge in hand. It's a large area which hasn't seen much love in recent months, but after removing the tarpaulin we discovered lots of good soil and plenty of worms - which apparently is a great sign.

After digging, weeding and tidying up, we made some decisions about what we'd like our garden to stand for. We would love to hear any more ideas or goals that you'd like to see. So far we have agreed we aim for a garden which:

  • is inclusive - everybody is welcome

  • supports the local community and good causes. We hope to grow plants and vegetables which we can donate to the theatre and other local organisations

  • is organic and creates better biodiversity - no nasty chemicals here!

  • is a beautiful, safe, calm and welcoming space for everybody to spend time

If you're keen to get involved in our next session when I hope we can get some planting done, then sign up for this Sunday right here.

I've set up a whatsapp group to discuss ideas, list sessions and talk all things garden, if you'd like to join then use this link:

We finished off a great first session with some fitness which saw us smash six hard minutes of circuits -great effort everybody.

I can't wait to see what we can achieve at our garden. We've taken the inaugural before photos, so watch this space to see how things change and develop over time. I think we're at the start of something brilliant!
