Planting and Greening at YHA Thameside
YHA is a national charity managing over 150 sites across England and Wales. Our mission is to enrich lives, particularly those of young people, by offering exceptional hostel stays and transformative experiences. We aim to connect young people with the outdoors, heritage, and adventure, helping them build confidence, improve their well-being, and create milestone memories. We support young people facing challenges through various projects and initiatives. This includes offering fully or partially funded residential trips for groups and families in need, funding school residentials for children from disadvantaged areas, and improving access to the outdoors through our Outdoor Citizens community, which champions inclusivity and diversity. At YHA London Thameside in Rotherhithe, weโ€™re seeking to enhance our green spaces and outdoor communal areas. Our goal is to improve the flower beds and courtyard by removing weeds and maintaining these areas. By improving and preserving these green spaces, we can provide lasting benefits for both the families and school groups who visit us, as well as local residents who use our facilities. We want to create a safe, attractive, and welcoming environment that invites the Rotherhithe community to enjoy our cafรฉ and outdoor areas. Enhanced green spaces would contribute to better air quality and positively impact the health and well-being of our visitors and the wider community. Additionally, these areas could foster social integration by encouraging volunteerism and hosting new activities, further strengthening community bonds.

It's Wednesday night and we're doing it right...it's also our group run night!

We've got a new task! Jess from YHA Thameside has asked for our help in clearing weeds and dead plants from the flowerbeds surrounding the hostel and the courtyard. It's a big run there - 6km... But the task is very close to Rotherhithe station, so if running both ways is too far, you could hope on the overground (20:03 train) back to Peckham.

New to GoodGym Southwark?

Not to worry, it can be daunting coming to your first group run, but we are so welcoming whether you're just starting out as a runner or have been running for years. We welcome all!

Here's all you need to know:

๐Ÿ“ We meet at Old Spike Roastery in Peckham between 18:30-18:45. You can also meet us at the task: YHA Thameside, 20 Salter Road, SE16 5PR by 19:20.

โŒš 18:30-18:45 (leaving at 18:45 latest). If meeting at task, be there for 19:20. We aim to be back in Peckham by 20:30.

๐ŸŽ’ There will be access to Old Spike Roastery, so you can drop your bags and use their toilets before we head out.

๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ After a quick warm-up, we run together as a group. There will be a back marker to ensure no one is left behind. On this run, we will be running 6k there at a medium pace to get to the task in 35 minutes. We will spend 30 minutes weeding.

Advisable: Bring ๐Ÿงค gardening gloves and ๐Ÿ”ฆ headtorches for the task!

Options are available to run between 6km and 12km in total

Remember that we run to and from the task, so you'll only be running for half this distance in one go.

This is a standard GoodGym group run. If you can't run for more than 15mins without stopping or you're worried about any aspect of the session, contact us or see if there's a starter session coming up in your area.
