Quick disclaimer: this is a niche joke based on the archaeological term for a small fragment of pottery - sherd/shard.

With Clara and Katie meeting at one gate to the park and Leanne, Paul, David and Laura met by our host at a different gate, we eventually converged and headed to the task location.

Our job was to excavate further the starting outline of a new and improved wildlife pond. the plan was for every 2 barrows that were used to fill the old pond in, 1 barrow would be tipped to create an embankment at one end of the pond. As with any task the intention and reality soon diverged as the plan to create a shallow and a deep end was met by lots of rubble and ceramic sherds and glass bottles.

Paul had fun doing his best time team impression and amassing a fair collection of bits of plates and other items.

Meanwhile Laura and David found out the hard way that they were excavating through an ants nest. And Katie and Clara just cracked on hurling soil and stones directly onto the spoil heap (who needs a wheelbarrow anyway?).

After an hour of our best efforts, it became clear that this was a bigger project than we anticipated, and could well do with pinching a digger from the works next door! We bid our host a farewell and headed off into the balmy yorkshire evening.

Disclaimer is probably the wrong term, author's note?
