Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Katherine (she/her)
2 Goodgymers returned to Feeding Coventry to help with plant watering and a litter pick.
After a slightly late start due to a car key crisis(!) and given the extremely hot weather, we decided to embrace the cycling part of Goodgym and used the Travel West Midlands cycle hire scheme (aka Beryl Bikes) to get part way to our task. With the bikes safely left at a docking station part way out of the city, we walk/ran the remaining distance to Feeding Coventry at Foleshill Community Centre.
We were greeted by Helen who explained that in all this hot weather, the key priority this evening was to water the plants in the polytunnel, as these had been neglected during yesterday's watering session! We had a walk around to the polytunnel and it soon became clear that an impromptu litter pick would also be beneficial to the centre.
With our tasks clear, we set to work filling the watering cans and carrying them all the way around the centre to the polytunnel, picking litter on our way back round to re-fill the watering cans. Thankfully it only took two trips to water all the plants in the tunnel, by which time a majority of the litter around the front and entrance to the centre had already been collected.
With tools safely locked away and the key returned, it was time for our (slightly cooler) run/walk back into town. We had the knack of it now so decided to use the Beryl bikes again for the last little stretch back into the city centre to get a bit of a cooler breeze.
It was lovely to catch up on each other's news and compare experiences at the recent Commonwealth Games athletics events.
Feeding Coventry is a small charity with big ambition: To create a food resilience city in Coventry where nobody goes hungry. We are committed to working with partners and local communities to tackle the root causes of hunger, build food security, provide low cost food to vulnerable groups and support people in crisis.
