Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Simon Fitzmaurice
On an absolutely lush spring time evening (despite some windy spells), Area Activator Simon met with a top crew of Goodgymmers for all across the boroughs, for a special group run. Since beginning his Goodgym adventure in 2016, Simon is about to complete 500 good deeds across London, an awesome trip that has helped him to become the AA that he is today!
This week, we have planned to return to Caledonian Park to continue our forest trail building sessions (lots of crushed concrete, shovels and wheelbarrows involved!). Emily and Benedict lead a walking group this week, while the rest of our team run the 1 mile route via Mackenzie Road and Holloway Road and up a slight slope.
Upon our arrival, we met up with volunteer coordinator Miriam who put us straight to our intended task. The original 10 tonne pile of gravel and chippings is now looking a bit more manageable after multiple weeks of graft! After filling up 6 wheelbarrows between us, we trundled to the South East of the park (a nice wooded section, popular for the junior parkrun held here every Sunday - see our next listing below!). Our objective is to create a fully accessible loop of the park, that encourages visitors to enjoy the natural green wooded spaces safely and without disturbing local habitats and eco-systems.
We completed 45 minutes of solid lifting and shifting work between us, along with some raking and beautifying of our new pathways. Miriam was thrilled with the progress that we had made in such a short amount of time. To celebrate, we had a few delicious treats to share between the group (vegan cakes, crimble biscuits and pastries- Thank you Patrick, Dharmesh and Louise!), and a social trip to The Horatia Pub on Holloway Road upon our return to The Emirates Stadium. Bao Buns and beverages all round!
