Report written by Dom Tooze (he/him)
Today 8 of GoodGym York ran, walked and cycled to help out at Green Lane Allotments.
There have been some problems with flooding on some of the plots, and a solution had been devised involving trenches and compost. There was a fair bit of digging and wheelbarrowing to be done, so we stepped in to offer some elbow grease.
We cracked on with the task with a team working on the trenches, another on the compost, and some of us wheeling compost to and fro and made a lot of progress. Discussion during the task covered the January Challenge (we're almost done!), other GG stuff this weekend, and the blowy weather. The team who help out at the allotment kindly offered us some snacks (including some cracking soup!), which powered us through the last few bits of the task. Lucy heard someone remark positively on the impact made, which saved me trying to think of a novel pun for the report.
Mission accomplished!
An elderly gentleman has managed a plot on Green Lane Allotments for many years. In recent years, the plot has tended to flood during the winter months and this has resulted in soil deterioration. It is a well-kept plot that would benefit from building up with fresh compost. We have a large stock of compost stored about 100 m away from the plot. We need to dig trenches in well-prepared soft soil, bury the compost, and recover.
