Report written by Joel Wiles
30 Spooky GoodGymers ran 6k in fancy dress to Abney Park Cemetery to shovel, barrow and rake a tonne of wood chip and un Ivy 100 grave stone.
Our Halloween special in Abney Park finally arrived with my costume anticipation it was awesome to see such quality costumes on show!!
We had a team of Skeletons, a possessed Lobster, a few animal Zombies, random monsters, Mr Cod Piece Clock Work Orange and of course to keep us all safe a Ghostbuster!!
Loving our big turn out for the evening and knowing we had a restricted time in Abney Park we got running on the 3k route past loads of Hackney’s best trick of treaters and a haunted house. Getting a lot of encouragement along the way!!
Meeting Tom at the gates we had to show our Spooky credentials to get in with Abney Park security enforcing a strict Skeleton only policy for the evening! Once we were locked in the darkness of the magnificent Cemetery we got to work, wheeling our squeaky barrows down into the depths of the Cemetery and getting to work but head light!
Splitting into 2 groups we had the Ivy cutters who jumped deep into the Cemetery overgrown grave stone to cut back as much Ivy from the writing as possible to help with the 18 month project to produce a comprehensive database of every grave site in the Cemetery! Looking for the Oldest grave and the oddest name the squad moved deep into the undergrowth.
The other half of the squad got seriously stuck into a slick, efficient and very fast shovelling, barrowing, tipping and raking production line! Some heroic shovelling, enabled us to complete a whole 60 metres of path in 30 minutes of frenzied action!
We silently(ish) made our way out as to not disturb the Halloween concert in the Chapel and with a staggered start powered our way back to base!
Great to have so many of the crew come along for our Halloween Social afterwards, for a sneaky refuel!!
Have a great week, see you all for another adventure next Tuesday up to Stamford Hill (about 8k Running).
Smooth Running
