SESSION ORGANISER
Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Benjamin Annear
Ding Dang Dong Ding, Dong Ding Dang Dong…. The clock at City Hall Struck 6.15pm, which could only mean one thing... It was time for GoodGym Cardiff to meet to run the streets, to get fit and do good whilst having fun!
Students have been graduating over the past couple of weeks. So firstly a HUGE congratulations if this was you! AND, in the words of Dr. Seuss, “You're off to Great Places! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting, So... get on your way!” Listen to full quote here :)
Now continue reading to find out what 22 GoodGym runners graduated in by completing tonight’s task and working out the mind bazoogling trivia question…
22 GoodGym runners met at Yr Hen Lyfrgell ready for the evening’s run. We had Martin join us for his first ever GoodGym run! A huge welcome and an applause from everyone! We had Mikey, Laurence and Stuart all bring their documents to be checked in order to be able to do Run Mission/Coach Runs – Well done guys!!! You’ll be getting in on GoodGym missions with Lucy, Alison and Ben in no time!
We then did our very stylish GoodGym walk, heading outside to warm up our muscles ready for the evening’s run. Ben led a brief warm up and also led a game of Fish and Chips. Fish and Chips, Fish and Chips?!?! – Contrary to popular belief, this game actually means you burn calories. The game involves runners running around like tadpoles in a pond and then pairing up with another person and saying either Fish or Chips. If each person in the pair say the same, they do 5 high knees, and if they both say different, they do 5 burpees! See… I told you that you actually burn calories playing this game… (Why don’t you explain the rules of this game with a friend/work colleague/family member and see if you end up doing high knees or burpees!?)
Ben then asked everyone a little trivia question and encouraged everyone to try and work it out whilst on the evening’s run. Runners were to try and see if they could work it out by the end of the run in order to become a GoodGym trivia graduate…
“A bat and a ball cost £1.10 in total. The bat costs exactly £1.00 more than the ball. How much does the ball cost?”
Let’s get running…
Without further ado we began our run to the café of the City United Reformed church. Up past Cardiff Castle, down Greyfriars road, back onto Queen Street, up Windsor Place and then WE ARRIVED! There we met Joel, Steen and Steen’s dog called Bear. Fliss immediately found a friend in Bear and it looked like Fliss may have been distracted from completing the task and would instead pet the dog for 30 minutes. Joel and Steen explained the evening’s task and straight away we all got to work, splitting into 2 groups; the painters and sanders. The painters began, very beautifully, painting the walls of the café whilst wearing black bin bags to protect their precious GoodGym t-shirt. The sanders took about 17 chairs outside to sand so the chairs would then be ready to varnish. Ben kept everyone on track by providing a countdown... He also socialised with Bear the dog during this time and got him to give a paw... and then the other paw - Clever dog!
Observing the task, Joel said;
"It’s awesome how much they are doing, we thought they’d just get a wall done and they’ve managed to do all 3 walls and sand chairs."
After completing the works we stood back and admired the result. It looked amazing! The walls in the café were painted and all of the chairs sanded. And, all of this was done in 30 minutes. We really enjoyed the task – thank you Joel and Steen for providing us with such a great task and a good workout!
1 Mile Sprint …. Woooppeee!
For this evening’s fitness session Ben planned a one mile sprint. Runners split into 3 groups, sub 8 minute, sub 9 minutes and 9 minutes plus. There was a minute gap between when each group set off. Ben was very trusting of Google’s ability to calculate distance, however it was measured too short. However, fortunately though, this was picked up and quickly rectified by Mikey - Saved the day! We now all have one mile times to try and improve on next month!
We earned a Cardiff cookie…
We then all ran back to the start, with Ben leading and Aimee providing some sensational backmarking. We stopped on the way to do squats and press-ups which allowed for everyone to catch up. Finishing off with a warm down, Ben let everyone know how far the evening's run was and mentioned what we will be doing next week :D
So do you think you know the answer to the trivia question above? Yes, no? Post your answer in the comment box below. The answer will be revealed at next week’s GoodGym run and also mentioned in the run report.
Want to get involved? - We'd love to have you!
