Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Sam Lefevre (he/him)
It was nothing like last week when we had a downpour throughout the whole group run session. Even a light sprinkling didn't deter Clare, Lindy and Magda to join Sam for Wednesday night's group run.
Sam waited for Clare and Lindy to arrive as he knew the team would meet Magda at the task.
Sam's intro speech was quick as the team had to get going due to the longer run. Tonight's question was to do with the fact it's Easter this weekend, so he asked: Since Jesus sacrifice his life, what has been a sacrifice you had to make?
Sam started off with the fact he had to sacrifice the pleasures of going out on the weekends during his early 20s after Uni in order to save towards his "first house" deposit. Clare sacrificed the pleasures of living in "Highbury" as they have the best bakeries. Lindy sacrificed something...but I forgot...sorry!
Down to earth
Running as a trio ensured we stuck at a comfortable pace as we smashed the 4k run in 20 minutes to arrive on time just as Eddie (the task owner) was clearing out the polytunnel and Magda had just arrived.
There was a mixture of finishing off the tasks we didn't finish off last time and getting started in the polytunnel.
The team split up as:
Clare and Lindy finishing off clearing all the soil in the raised beds outside. Sam assisted with some digging and pushing the wheelbarrows of soil to the temporary depositing spot.
Magda helped Eddie clear the polytunnel before starting to clear the soil in those raised beds.
Once the first "unfinished" task was done, Clare and Lindy helped Magda dig out soil and fill the wheelbarrow whilst Sam did several runs to remove the soil.
The 45 minutes of soil digging and moving was accompanied by various tunes from Sam's mixed playlist.
The same runners ran back, but at a slower pace after all their energy was spent at the Nature Reserve!
Thank You to all the GG-ers
A personal thanks from me to all those who came out tonight! Almost a power hour, but definitely a work out after a 4k run each way (8k in total) and then 45 minutes lifting and shifting soil. Hope your legs and shoulders aren't too sore today.
Thank You Eddie
GoodGym is all about getting fit and doing good! We praise the runners/cyclists/walkers who come to get fit and help out, but we often forget about our task owner. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Eddie for organising this second task at Galleywall Nature Reserve in two weeks as he wanted to get the redevelopment project going. We will be back for more in May / June.
The Galleywall Nature Reserve is a small plot of land which has been owned by Southwark Housing for decades. It was used by the adjacent Galleywall School for some time before the school closed. It has been maintained by a group of volunteers, the Friends of Galleywall Nature Reserve, since 2004, under an ongoing long-term agreement with the council.
