Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Lilian
This weeks, three members of Coventry GoodGym went on a mission to support “Feeding Coventry” at their social supermarket.
Having been inundated with lots of generous fresh food donations from recently closed pubs and cafes, there was lots of produce to organise and store safely.
When we arrived, the supermarket team gave us a warm welcome, whilst explaining the strict distancing and hygiene protocols that we needed to maintain. It was clear that the supermarket needed support with organising their cold storage room so that produce could be stored safely in order to maximise its shelf life and ensure that it could be distributed to as many people as possible. Jackie and Laura soon set about a plan for rearranging the units and getting them all scrubbed down. Lil went backwards and forwards filling up water buckets for cleaning, and getting those steps up too!
Once the units were cleaned down and arranged, we were able to get the food organised and stored away. In the space of a few hours, the room was transformed for the social supermarket. By stepping in to do this task, regular volunteers were freed up to support their service users fully. The room looks great now; produce is clearly organised and the service will be able to take lots of donations to keep Coventry fed and nourished in these difficult times, and in the future too. We even had time to stop for a quick socially distant and well earned cup of tea. The team were really impressed with our work and we hope that it will enable them to reach out to even more Coventry citizens in need.
Great job team!
