Getting the Rec ready to rumble
5 GoodGymers made their way to help their local community in Portsmouth.

I love Kingston Rec! I love seeing a park that is so well-used by all generations and overhearing so many different languages, which reflect Fratton's multi-ethnic community. This evening there were so many people using the Rec's great facilities: families playing ball; kids cycling over the bike mounds; a group of young men playing a serious game of footie; teenagers shooting hoops; and dog walkers, runners and Parkletics enthusiasts. Five GoodGymers joined other volunteers from Fratton Big Local to litter-pick the play area, ready for its re-opening this weekend. Catherine, Lynn & Jen removed every tiny piece of litter from the play area (which also involved clambering on the equipment and crawling through the tunnel!) while Sam and I cleared the perimeter fence and a substantial part of the grass area. After all the recent negative coverage of litter-strewn beaches and beauty spots, it was a pleasure to find just the regular amounts of litter - small sweet wrappers, cigarette ends, a few drinks bottles and cans. Sam was the unlucky one who found vomit in a bowl and trod in dog's mess! But the other great thing about Kingston Rec is we always have great chats with local residents who appreciate our efforts. It is clear that Fratton people love their Rec and the play area will be well-loved again from this weekend.
