Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Saul Muldoon
Following last week’s pancakes there were more snacks for GoodGymmers on Tuesday evening. Not only did Paula our task owner provide us with a great job, she also supplied the now traditional orange squash and KitKats on our arrival at Dalton library. However an even greater treat awaited for us at the end of the evening when GoodGymmer David Bilton revealed he had made gluten free scones for the group. What a good night!
It wasn’t just eating however we did some running and a task too. A group of six GoodGym regulars comprising Kati Law, Ben Godfrey, David Bilton, Zena Whalley, Wendy Redmile and myself ran the 2.5K to Dalton Library to meet with Paula Wood from S2R. Paula and Bridget Hughes had already been busy delivering the Dalton Community Newsletter to hundreds of houses in the area, and our task was to post a few hundred more.
Six runners, forty-five minutes and three hundred newsletters, some quick maths revealed that meant a total of fifty per person to post through letterboxes. So following our first refreshments of the night we set forth our stack of newsletters. A dry night contrasted markedly with the wet conditions we have been experiencing since Christmas, and it was great to be out in the cold, crisp conditions. This must have energised the group too as we were soon off, up and down the labyrinthine roads and alleys of Rawthorpe estate ensuring all the properties received a newsletter.
A source of great debate amongst Huddersfield GoodGymmers is always the best implement to help with posting leaflets and newsletters. For a long time a wooden spoon or spatula has been the tool of choice to help lever up letterboxes and avoid the canines of any canines hiding behind the door. On this occasion Zena Whalley was trialling another implement, alongside spoons and spatulas we had a genuine Scottish spurtle. If you didn’t know (and many of us didn’t) a spurtle is a special tool used to stir porridge. Unfortunately Zena reported it proved less effective for posting leaflets and it looks like spoons and spatulas will continue to reign supreme over spurtles in the future.
After a lot of running and posting we had exhausted our supply of newsletters and headed downhill back to the Stadium. Ben, who seemed to have an abundance of energy sprinted whilst the remainder of us ambled back at a more social pace.
A final (and very welcome) surprise of the night came in the form of David’s aforementioned home made gluten free scones which were swiftly polished off and distracted everyone from the post run stretch. Thanks Paula for last night’s task, everyone else for their efforts last night and particularly David for the scones, which made for a tasty treat at the end of another great GoodGym night.
