Report written by Sam Lefevre (he/him)
On the 4th of May and in a galaxy far far away....
(Cue long worded intro going forever into Space)
Thinking the group run would be a wash out, four GoodGymers came along for tonight's group run to Cossall Estate.
All the sign-ups came quite early (18:30) as the group run starts at 18:45, but something in Sam made him want to wait until 18:45 instead of going for a longer run. Glad he did as Emma showed up at 18:45 on the dot as Sam was doing his GG speech.
They were back in the alleyway for their warm-up as the grass on the Green was wet from the rain earlier and so Sam did not want to risk want injuries. Since today was May the 4th, our ice-breaker question tonight was in line with Star Wars Day and Sam asked: What Star Wars character do you related to?
Sam started the proceedings off by saying he relates to Baby Yoda or an Ewok as they are cute and cuddly like him....then Emma said Darth Maul because he is evil and has a two bladed lightsaber, Paulin didn't know any Star Wars character, but heard Jar Jar Binks is cool and finally, Nelly went for Obi Wan Kenobi as he is the hero in the majority of the Star Wars films and TV series.
Weed love to help
Our very gentle 2.5k run took around Peckham Rye Common before heading towards Nunhead and accessing Cossall Estate via Gordon Road.
At the community hall, Jaki, her partner and Oscar (the dog) were waiting for us as we arrived on time. Since the rain had stopped, we were still up for a bit of weeding. We collected the tools needed to tackle the job from the shed and headed towards one of the two main areas for fruit/veg growing in raised beds on the estate.
Deciding to concentrate on a small bit rather than spreading ourselves thin, we worked in pairs as we weeded one raised bed. Within 25 minutes, you could see the difference and importantly, you could see the soil to plant more fruits and veg in the summer. We did free up weeds around a raspberry bush thus giving it a chance to grow more!
Having filled all the bin bag with weeds, we took these and the tools back to the shed as the compost bins were full!
We said our goodbyes to Jaki as we promised to come back in the summer to help out some more and potentially help out with their festival (if they need us).
Our run back was more direct as we were keen to start our monthly social at Angel Oak in time!
Thank You to all the GG-ers
A personal thanks from me to all those who came and ran tonight! We just managed to avoid the rain and what a difference we made to the raised bed. Thank you for coming out for our monthly social too! Apologies we couldn't go to the park, but Angel Oak was a good alternative. We're now done Angel Oak, Four Quarters, White Horse and Bo Kiri. We will be back at Bo Kiri next month before a special treat in July!
Thank You Jaki
GoodGym is all about getting fit and doing good! We praise the runners/cyclists/walkers who come to get fit and help out, but we often forget about our task owner. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Jaki for giving us such a lovely task after the rain had fell! Pulling out those weeds were easy and we are looking forward to helping out in the Summer!
