Day 3 of helping City of York Council and the Friends of West Bank Park keep the park free of ice and a safe space for local residents to take essential exercise.
Just to emphasise the need for gritting it was a chilly -1 (and according to my weather app, felt like -4), so the by now well drilled team sprung into action getting lights, wheelbarrows, shovels and trowels ready for the task.
And here was a revelation, Babs pointed out that the Friday night team had attached the lights to the front of the wheelbarrows. And how cool does a wheelbarrow look with a front headlight - everyone wanted to push one now! (Why have we never done this before?!)
Everyone split off into teams of 2-3 and spread out into the park; in most places a small top up was required but there was a definite frost forming.
Clearly on a frosty night no one was hanging around so it seemed no time at all before we gathered back around the gate and the task was done.
Just time to tidy up the remaining pile of grit, brush all the salt off the shovels and barrows and pose for the team photo.
And with that everyone headed off into the night.

Conservation work, edible planting, annual fairs and Christmas carols, pop-up cafes, fundraising to develop the park and playground, campaigning against cuts to the park's budgets, locking and unlocking the park each day and night, involving the community in decision-making about the park, children's and family activities, volunteering opportunities, etc etc!!
