Report written by Nicky Woodall (she/her)
๐ 11 fantastically festive GoodGymmers met for our final group run of 2021. After discussing our favourite Christmas films (Die Hard was the surprise most popular), we headed back to Holgate Community Orchard to continue our work there. Helen met us with shovels and forks aplenty so we quickly set to work in two groups ๐
๐ฑTeam Dig were continuing to dig some very stubborn roots with Jenna and Barbara getting particular satisfaction with the impressively large roots they dug out.
๐ฌThere was an interesting quote I've sadly forgotten, something about Leanne inviting Barbara to shake soil all over her?! ๐
๐งโโ๏ธ Martin (aka the genie of the lamp) continued his (magic?!) carpet-finding mission and unearthed yet another carpet to add to the pile. The size of said unearthed carpet meant that it was definitely a teamwork operation and with much leverage and collaboration, the carpet came out ๐
๐ฟMeanwhile, Team Levelling were with Helen, turning and moving soil to make the ground level more even whilst also removing roots that had snuck in there. They did a brilliant job and made a massive difference to the corner they were working on,which looked much more level at the end than when we arrived โ๏ธ
๐We left the task with almost as much soil attached to our trainers as was left in the beds and headed over for the 12 Squats of Fitmas. Clearly the highlight of everyone's day (if not year), everyone did an absolutely cracking job ๐ช
๐ฅตWith slightly rosier cheeks after that workout, we headed back to CVS for some cool-down stretches and mince pies (thank you George!) ๐ฅง
๐ Thank you so much for coming out so close to Christmas, and to everyone in GoodGym York for a brilliant end to 2021๐
๐Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, and see you in 2022 โ
Holgate Allotment Association are a volunteer group of allotment holders who try to make Holgate Allotments a great place to socialise and grow veg. We have an allotment plot on the boundary of our site which is unused and completely overgrown but which we think will make a lovely orchard and wildlife area with seating for the local community to enjoy. Clearing the site will be a massive task, but it's one we want to embark on this Autumn. Can you help?
