Report written by Benjamin Annear
9 runners joined in with GoodGym Cardiff tonight and ran to help out the Global Gardens Project, eager not to get a yellow card by missing the run for the football!
Ben, Su, Ellen, Tanya and Mikey all met at Yr Hen Lyfrgell. They then ran the 1.8 mile journey to the allotments, stopping by some graffiti for a photo opportunity and Mikey even found time to clap his feet together whilst jumping in the air…just like a frog!
We ran to the allotment at a healthy speed where Lydia, Lucy, Rosie and Emma were waiting for us - They found running the whole 1.8 miles there and back slightly daunting in the 30 degree weather :P .
"GoodGym Cardiff, It’s great to see you all!"
Poppy greeted us with a warm smile and gardening tools at the ready. Poppy runs the Global Gardens Project; The Global Gardens Project is a community growing project based in Cardiff. The vision of the project is to create a growing space that supports community-based sharing of food and cultures. Poppy explained to us what she needed our help with and without further ado we got stuck straight in. Rosie, Tanya and Emma took to watering the plants – saving the beautiful plants who have been deprived of much needed water over the past month. Lucy and Mikey took to pulling up the overgrowth and moving the woodchip so the space could be soon be used for perennial flowers. Ellen and Lydia then engaged in some intense soil digging, to loosen it and aerate it ready for planting the flowers.
After 35 minutes of helping out it was time to head back to Yr Hen Lyfrgell
We said goodbye and thank you to Poppy for giving us a reason to run. We love visiting the allotments, we’ve seen it change so much over the past year and it feels great knowing that we’ve helped it develop to how it looks today. We can't wait to our next run there!
So don’t forget to sign up to next week’s run - we need as many hands as possible! Click here to sign up.
