Report written by Madhan
As I entered City Harvest, I was welcomed by all things red. Richard, whom I did my first-ever City Harvest task with, was putting Red Bell peppers into a tray. I swapped the role with him and started making trays in a skate instead of pallets as we usually do.
I was joined by Gareth who doing it at double my speed. I wasn't at my full strength this evening, so I took things at a lighter pace and stacked up the crates. After tossing quite a few spoiled bell peppers into the waste tray, we managed to pull all the good ones in to tray and moved them to the fridge.
Next, we shifted to the Lemon family. We made mixed crates of Lime, Lemon, and two types of oranges. There was one pack of passion fruit as well. Most of the oranges were moldy, and so does some of the lemons and a few limes. We tried throwing the moldy fruits into a waste tray from far away. We had an 80% accuracy rate.
Soon the oranges went out, limes followed and we had so many Lemons left over. We put all of the lemons into two crates and Jason, the warehouse manager, said that would be enough for the day and we all left.
City Harvest helps put surplus food to good use in a sustainable way, by distributing to organisations that feed the hungry.
