Extra (task) Extra (task) - Weed all about it at your Big Local... alternative pun?
Tonights task was a follow to last week weeding and clearing another flower bed at the community area at St Matthews.
We were delighted to welcome Rachel., a triathlete in training for her first half marathon in Nottingham in September, and for me personally it was great to see Martin back - Martin was there 2 years ago when it all started in Leicester. I was delighted to hear how his running has improved and that he has now joined West End Runners and has a target to do the Manchester Marathon next year.
Our route to task took us along the Grand Union Canal to Belgrave Circle then we weaved our way through the streets of St Matthews to Mackenzie Way where we picked up the key to the tool store from St Matthews House. Sharon was heard to say that she was actually beginning to figure out where places were in Leicester! - thats the thing about running, one often finds places you never knew existed.
A short hop to the community sports area and we were soon into the tool store collecting rakes, forks, spades, and waste bags.
We identified the bed that needed clearing - a veritable jungle of maybe 25 or so square metres and everyone got stuck in - even photographer Mel who is nursing a bad back... "My kinda task" she said "Just had to do it, I love it when we can see how much of a difference we have made"
After a good 25 minutes the patch was clear - Jimmy and Martin doing the fine raking, Mel, Rachel and Sheila picking up the final few traces of weed. A bit of a pity that the plan is to grass it over but at least they will have a nice surface for the seed to get started,
With tools away we moved to the track for a jog sprint session - that warmed us all up! not that we needed warming up given the humidity of the night.
Martin said his goodbyes as he lives quite near so was jogging home and Mel went back to the car. For the rest of us it was back to drop off the key before a different way back passing the Curve, Scope, Belvoir St and the Magazine.
I was very pleased to arrive back at 7:28 pm - perfect timing. A quick warm down stretch and some news about next week when we shall celebrate 2 years. A big well done to Rachel for her first task and it was off home for whatever your Tuesday night had in store.
See you next week.
