9 Ran to Broomfield Hospital to work on the sunken garden
Although the light is rapidly retreating the evening was unseasonably warm once again and the discussion on how many layers were needed was in full flow. As we gathered and began our run it was definitely t shirt weather, and the loner run made sure we all worked up a sweat. The task was a new one for us and we were unsure what to expect, except that there could be some hard work involved! On arrival we were greeted by David and Richard who outlined the task, and we were correct with the assumption that there was a lot of work to be done! The Garden has not been used a great deal as there is just one small seat in the sunken garden and so the area is to be improved with the aid of a grant to build new seating, a covered area and some decorative arches to make the area more appealing. Before the retaining walls and seating can be put in there is a lot more digging to do! We split in to smaller groups as there was barely room to swing a shovel and each two or three began work on the six seating areas that had been started, or moved top soil or dug up roots along the garden. We quickly discovered digging and moving soil is hard work! Never the less tonnes of soil was relocated, thick clay filled ground was dug and broken up and this was also moved out of the seating areas. We were treated to some water to keep us going and tidied up in time for the run back, completing 9.3km in total! This epic run and heavy digging meant all of us had a good workout and hopefully are not suffering too much for it this morning! Particularly as we are going back next week do do some more! I feel that this is a really worthwhile cause and will provide and really nice area for those visiting or having treatment at the hospital to take a few minutes out.
Don't forget the Social tomorrow! Golden fleece from 7pm, Quiz at 8.30!
