Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Lucy Hill
I was joined by Arba for my final mission of the day - to help Mr S mow his lawn. We thought it might be a bit touch and go, or should I say touch and mow, as the rain came in dribs and drabs. Luckily, as we arrived, the weather was holding out, and we knocked to let Mr S know we had arrived.
Mr S took us through the side gate to the back garden, where we could see the knee and waist high grass, and the patio area covered in weeds and a spaghetti of convolvulus flowers. (Fun fact, I only learnt what convolvulus was this morning, and I felt very knowledgable telling Arba this). Mr S wanted us to give it a go, as unfortunately last week he had a GoodGym mission cancelled, and we were ready to accept this challenge.
Arba got to work straight away, pulling up weeds from the patio, whereas I was with Mr S, setting up his lawnmower. Mr S was very proud of his hover mower, and wasn’t able to look after his garden the way he used to, as he had cardiac issues. He was more than willing to get involved with us, and once he had shown me how to go with the mow, I was off.
It was blooming hard work, as the mower was quite powerful, and therefore quite heavy. I hadn’t even realised it was raining, as I was sweating so much! Mr S stopped us, and brought out hats to wear so we didn’t get wet, bless him, but Arba had her orange rain Mac and I was already wet with sweat, so kindly turned down his offer. Mr S had donned some headwear, and whilst I took a break from the mowing, he took over, and I joined Arba on pulling up the tangle of convolvulus.
Time was flying by, and soon Mr S was admiring his ‘less than ankle length’ grass. We couldn’t help but feel a bit smug too - we had done a pretty good job. We tidied up, and squashed the grass and weeds into boxes for composting, and compared the before and after shots!
Mr S was super pleased, and as a thank you, insisted we took a bar of chocolate each. After the hard work, I think we it was well earned. Mow grass, kick ass.
